EAST STROUDSBURG – The East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team fell to IUP, 73-52, in the final game of the calendar year on Saturday afternoon inside Koehler Fieldhouse.
The Warriors dropped to 3-7 overall and 1-4 in the conference while the Crimson Hawks moved to 7-2 on the season and 4-1 in the PSAC.
ESU found themselves leading 11-5 after the first quarter as IUP was limited to 1-for-14 (7.1%) shooting overall, but the Crimson Hawks proceeded to outscore the Warriors by (68-41) 27 points over the final 30 minutes to earn their third straight victory.
Notables
- The Warriors finished with three players in double figures as senior Carley Adams poured in a team-high 12 points to go with three rebounds, two steals and an assist. Adams went 2-for-2 at the free throw line and is now shooting 29-for-32 (90.6%) overall at the stripe this season.
- Junior Emily Chmiel added an impressive 11 points (3-4 FG, 5-5 FT) and six rebounds in seven minutes off the bench while fellow classmate Cassidy Saylor contributed 10 points, five rebounds and a trio of blocks
- In 37 minutes, junior Corrin Gill registered seven points, three assists, two rebounds and a steal while Izzy Vogel (eight rebounds, two steals, one block) and Gwenn Sabato (one assist, one steal) each scored five points
- IUP had a trio of double figure scorers including a double-double from Rahmena Henderson on 18 points, 10 rebounds, six steals, two assists and one block. Nyshae' Weaver added 18 points, nine rebounds, one assist and one steal off the bench while Kiera Baughman totaled 11 points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal.
- Despite the extremely slow start for IUP, the Crimson Hawks shot 25-for-65 (38.5%) overall and 9-for-24 (37.5%) from long distance, while ESU went 19-for-47 (40.4%) and 1-for-7 (14.3%) from three-point territory
- The teams combined to attempt 43 free throws as IUP finished 14-for-22 (63.6%) compared to 13-for-19 (68.4%) for the Warriors
- The Crimson Hawks forced ESU into 23 turnovers, which included 19 steals, while committing only 16 miscues
- IUP held the edge in overall rebounding 41-34 and took advantage on the offensive glass as the Crimson Hawks outrebounded ESU by 11 (23-12)
- The Crimson Hawks improved to 22-3 over ESU in the all-time series and have defeated the Warriors in the last 17 meetings dating back to 2001
How It Happened
- ESU raced out to a 6-0 lead through the first six-plus minutes of the game as IUP shot 0-for-9 until Teirra Preston knocked down a pair of free throws at the 3:15 mark. After the Crimson Hawks cut the deficit to 7-5, the Warriors closed out the first quarter on a 4-0 run to regain a 11-5 edge.
- After a Crimson Hawks' layup made the score 11-7 to begin the second quarter, ESU produced a 5-0 spurt to go back ahead 16-7. However, IUP battled back with a 6-0 run to make the score 16-13, but the Warriors scored the next six points to secure a 22-13 advantage. A timeout by IUP at the 5:10 mark turned the tides as the Crimson Hawks outscored the Warriors, 17-4, the rest of the first half to take a 30-26 lead into the locker room.
- IUP carried over momentum into the second half as the Crimson Hawks opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run to push the edge to 37-26. It was back and forth over the next three and a half minutes as the Warriors were able to trim the deficit to 42-32. Out of the media break it was more of the same as ESU outscored IUP by one point (7-6) to find themselves trailing 48-39 headed into the final 10 minutes.
- Through the first 4:25 of the fourth quarter, the Crimson Hawks scored 12 of the first 19 points scored to extend the lead to 60-46 with 5:35 on the clock. It was all IUP the rest of the game as the Crimson Hawks used a 13-6 run to earn a 73-52 victory over the Warriors.
