Warriors Move to Second Place, Snap Millersville’s Win Streak after Fast Start

EAST STROUDSBURG – After a fast start that saw the East Stroudsburg University men's basketball build a 14-2 lead at the first media timeout, the Warriors held on to defeat Millersville, 75-65, on Saturday afternoon inside Koehler Fieldhouse.

With the win, the Warriors (19-6, 13-6 PSAC) move into a tie for second place with Millersville and now hold a potential tiebreaker with the Marauders. The loss for Millersville (16-9, 13-6 PSAC) snapped a nine-game winning streak for 'Ville.

Carlos Pepin registered his 12th double-double of the season, pacing the Warriors with 19 points (9-14 FG) and 12 rebounds. Pepin also produced two steals and a pair of blocks without turning the ball over in 31 minutes on the court. His 12th double-double of the season ties him with Josh Williams (2018-19) for the most in the Jeff Wilson era (since 2002-03). Pepin previously recorded the most double-doubles in his career under Jeff Wilson and now has 21. 

Notables

  • Lakeem McAliley recorded 15 points, with all of his points coming in the first half. He led ESU with four steals and also contributed four assists.
  • Jaelen McGlone poured in 13 points, three rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals. David Duda Jr. also reached double-figures with 10 points, drilling 3-of-6 attempts from 3-point land.
  • Justin Paz paced ESU with six assists, while Shamir Johnson added five helpers.
  • The Warriors forced 25 turnovers, with 16 coming in the opening 20 minutes. ESU took advantage and with 29 points off turnovers.
  • ESU led in field goal percentage, assists, steals, fastbreak points, points off turnovers, points in the paint.


How It Happened

  • ESU started the contest red hot by scoring the first 12 points of the game, knocking down its first six field goals. The Marauders registered six turnovers before it attempted a field goal attempt.
  • Millersville used an 11-5 sprint to cut the deficit to six, but ESU countered with eight consecutive to grab a 27-13 lead with 9:19 left in the first half. Leading 29-16, the Marauders scored 11 of the next 15 points to get within seven at 33-26. Duda Jr. knocked down his first triple to end the scoring run. The Warriors closed the first half on a 9-5 run, as Duda Jr. splashed a 3-pointer at the buzzer, as the Warriors led 45-31 after 20 minutes of action.
  • After Pepin opened the second half with a layup, 'Ville registered the next six points to make it a 10-point game at 47-37. The Marauders got as close as five points to ESU at 51-46 at the 13:06 mark, but the Warriors immediately countered, using a 14-5 run to retake a 14-point lead at 65-51 lead with 6:52 to go.
  • From that point, ESU led by at least 10 over the final six-plus minutes, taking home a 75-65 victory to sweep the Marauders.
