LEWISBURG – Highlighted by freshman Donavan Anderson eclipsing a 26-year-old school record in the long jump, the East Stroudsburg University men's track and field team posted seven top-eight finishes on the opening day of the 2023 PSAC Indoor Championships on Saturday inside Gerhard Fieldhouse.
The freshman continued to amaze in his first season wearing the red and black as Anderson etched his name into the history books with a jump of 7.44m (24-5) on his second attempt of the evening. Anderson broke the previous program record of 24-4 ¼, held by three-time All-American Rob Stone since 1996.
Securing spots in tomorrow's finals for their respective events were Zandrew Bowe (400m), Anderson (60m), Kobe Jenkins (60mH), Miguel Charlery (200m) and Raul Esteves (200m).
Following the first day of competition, the Warriors sit third in the team standings with 23.5 points as Shippensburg leads the way with 56 points.
Heptathlon Highlights
After the first four events of the heptathlon, Caleb Carney leads a trio of Warriors in fifth place with 2541 points, followed by Daniel Daley in sixth (2449) and Bryan Rodrigues in 12th (2216).
The trio of Warriors kicked off the heptathlon in the 60m dash as Carney was the highest finisher in sixth with a personal-best time of 7.31. Rodrigues secured a 10th place finish with a personal-best mark of 7.41 and Daley took 13th at a season-best time of 7.50.
In the long jump, Carney paced the Warriors in sixth place with a season-best leap of 6.15m (20-2 ¼), while Daley took in eighth at a season-best mark of 6.10m (20-0 ¼). Rodrigues came in 13th with a jump of 5.80m (19-0 ½).
Carney led ESU once again as the junior took third place in the shot put at 10.29m (33-9 ¼). Daley (9.97m – 32-8 ½) and Rodrigues (9.54m – 31-3 ¾) rounded out the top-10 in ninth and 10th, respectively.
ESU closed out the first half of the heptathlon with the high jump as Carney was the runner-up after clearing a season-best height of 1.82m (5-11 ½). Daley was not far behind in a tie for fourth at 1.82m (5-11 ½) and Rodrigues took 14th with a height of 1.61m (5-3 ¼).
Running Highlights
In the distance medley relay, the combination of Luke Valdevit, Jaylen Morrison, Emmanuel Gitonga and Brian McGarrity secured a seventh place finish after running the Warriors' fastest time of the season at 10:29.19.
Bowe secured the ESU men's first competitor in tomorrow's finals as the junior finished fifth in the 400m with the third fastest time in heat two at 50.49.
In the 60m, Anderson advanced to the final as the freshman matched his season-best time after crossing the line 7.02.
Jenkins punched his ticket to the finals in the 60m hurdles as the freshman matched his season-best time at 8.35 on his way to taking fourth in the prelims.
In the 5000m, Landon Boyle captured an 11th place finish as the freshman crossed the line in a personal-best time of 15:38.03.
The Warriors capped of their day on the track with a pair of qualifiers for tomorrow's finals in the 200m. Charley continues to impressive in just his second appearance for ESU as the freshman finished sixth at a personal-best 22.40, while Esteves secured a seventh place finish with a time of 22.51.
Field Event Highlights
On his way to a runner-up finish in the long jump, Anderson broke the school record on his second attempt after leaping 7.44m (24-5). The freshman was in first place until Slippery Rock's Bryan Dworek delivered a mark of 7.46m (24-5 ¾) with his final jump. Sophomore Jack Gorham captured a seventh place finish for the Warriors after jumping 6.77m (22-2 ½) on his sixth attempt.
The Warriors earned a trio of top-eight finishes in the weight throw as graduate student Daryn Blackwell led the way in fifth with a mark of 16.69m (54-9 ¼), while junior Isaac Almoney followed right behind in sixth at 16.45m (53-11 ¾). Freshman Anthony Voto earned a point for ESU with an eighth place finish following a throw of 15.44m (50-8).
In the pole vault, Chris Costa turned in an impressive performance as the freshman cleared the bar at a personal-best height of 4.30m (14-1 ¼) to finish in a tie for fifth. Fellow classmate Evan Clark took 14th with a mark of 3.85m (12-7 ½).
