STROUDSBURG – Following a pair of tight losses to Wilmington, the East Stroudsburg University softball team bounced back with two dominant wins over Holy Family on Sunday, downing the Tigers 9-1 in game one and earned the sweep with a 10-0 victory in game two at Creekview Park's Vigon International Field.
The Warriors (4-6) picked up their third and fourth victories of the season, while the Tigers (0-4) remain winless.
Both contests were shortened with the run-limit reached after 5.2 innings in game one and an even five innings in game two's combined no-hitter.
Notables
- Brooke McKeown led the Warriors with four hits in five at-bats on the day. She smacked three singles, a triple, and drew a walk while crossing home plate four times.
- Jada Smallwood and Reilly Vicendese both contributed three RBIs on three hits. Smallwood recorded a pair of doubles, while Vicendese produced a double. Denva Shaw-Tait also collected three hits, including a double, and drove in a run.
- Kate Donaghue blasted her first home run of the season in game two. She finished the day with three hits and two RBIs.
- Molly Nies added two hits, two RBIs, and three runs scored. Abigail Weirich tallied a hit and sent home two Warriors.
- In the circle, Paige Zigmund (W, 2-1) pitched all six innings of the shortened game one, allowing just three hits and an earned run, which came off a solo home run. She struck out seven and allowed just one extra-base hit. She held the Tigers to hit just .143 on the day.
- Maddy Pritchard (W, 2-2) posted the game two win that was wrapped up in the fifth inning. She and Leigh Ann Jenkins combined for the five-inning no-hitter. Pritchard tallied six strikeouts and gave up three walks, while Jenkins fanned five of the six batters she faced.
How it Happened: ESU 9, Holy Family 1
- In the top of the first inning, East Stroudsburg struck first as Brooke McKeown scored on a double by Molly Nies to give them an early 1-0 lead. Reilly Vicendese then hit a sacrifice fly to right field, which scored Nies to extend the lead to 2-0. Kaitlin Houser drew a walk with the bases loaded, bringing in Jada Smallwood to make it 3-0. Katherine Donaghue then hit a single to right field, driving in Abigail Weirich to increase the lead to 4-0.
- In the second inning, Weirich hit a single through the right side, bringing in Vicendese, who reached base on an error, to give East Stroudsburg a 5-0 lead.
- The third inning saw McKeown hit a bunt single to bring in Houser, who had reached on a walk, to extend the lead to 6-0.
- Holy Family finally got on the board in the fourth inning as Ciasullo hit a home run to make it 6-1.
- In the sixth inning, Smallwood hit a double to right center, scoring both Nies and McKeown to increase the lead to 8-1. Weirich then reached on an error, which allowed pinch-runner Kasey Ulmer to score, making it 9-1 in favor of East Stroudsburg to end the contest early, reaching the run-rule threshold.
How it Happened: ESU 10, Holy Family 0
- In the first inning, Nies reached base on an error by the shortstop and brought in the first run of the game. Vicendese then hit a triple to right center, allowing Nies to score and extending the lead to 2-0. A sacrifice bunt by Weirich brought in Vicendese and made the score 3-0 in favor of the Warriors.
- In the second inning, a walk by McKeown led to a run scored by pinch-runner Jade Hassler due to a wild pitch. Vicendese hit a single to left field, bringing in McKeown and extending the lead to 5-0. Smallwood followed with a single to right center, allowing Vicendese to score. An error by the catcher allowed pinch runner Kasey Ulmer to score and a double by Shaw-Tait brought in Weirich, extending ESU's edge to 8-0.
- In the third inning, Donaghue blasted a home run to left field, extending the advantage to 9-0. An additional run scored due to a throwing error by the catcher in the frame to make it 10-0 after three innings.
- HFU could not score in its final six outs, as the contest ended with the final score of 10-0 in favor of the Warriors after five innings.
