Warriors Complete Three-Game Sweep of Saint Anselm

EAST STROUDSBURG – With the help of four runs in the bottom of the third inning, the East Stroudsburg University baseball team completed the three-game sweep of Saint Anselm with an 8-1 win against the Hawks on Monday at Creekview Park.

The Warriors extended their win streak to seven games and improved their overall record to 9-2 while Saint Anselm fell to 1-9.

Notables
  • The Warriors had four players record multiple hits on the afternoon, led by redshirt senior Logan Stirr who finished 2-for-3 with a double, two walks, two RBI and two runs scored
  • Reigning PSAC East Freshman of the Year Jack Rothenhausler went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a pair of runs
  • Redshirt junior Mike Kelly posted a pair of hits in three official plate appearances to go along with a walk, one RBI and a run scored
  • Ben Piripavel posted a 2-for-5 day out of the lead spot as the redshirt junior also scored a run
  • Additionally driving in runs for the Warriors was Parker Frey (1-for-3), Tim Haverstick (1-for-4) and Jeremy Piatkiewicz
  • Brent Francisco continued to shut down the opposition as the redshirt junior moved to 3-0 on the season after firing 5.0 innings, allowing one run on four hits while striking out six Hawks. Nick McAuliffe surrendered two hits over 3.0 innings to go along with five strikeouts and Ryan Dewees need just 10 pitches to retire Saint Anselm in the ninth inning.
  • With six more punchouts today, Francisco increased his career total to 197 which ranks seventh all-time in program history.  
  • The Warriors were patience at the dish all afternoon, drawing 13 walks which included multiple from Piatkiewicz (3), Matt Ervolina (2), Frey (2) and Stirr (2)
  • In today's NCBWA Atlantic Region Poll, ESU held steady at No. 3. The Warriors were still receiving votes in the most recent NCBWA Top 25, but an updated poll will be revealed tomorrow.
How it Happened – (ESU 8, Saint Anselm 1)
In the bottom of the second inning, the Warriors used a trio of walks and a hit to score the game's first run. Stirr was able to draw a free pass and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches become racing home on a sacrifice fly from Kelly to give ESU a 1-0 lead.

With two outs and a runner on second in the top of the third inning, Will Panarello produced a ground rule double over the center field fence to plate Danny Kent, which tied the game at 1-1.

ESU cashed in during the bottom of the third inning as the Warriors manufactured four runs on three hits and four walks to regain a 5-1 lead. With the bases loaded and no outs, Frey manufactured a four-pitch walk to put the Warriors back ahead, 2-1. Piatkiewicz followed with a sacrifice fly, then Stirr doubled to left field to drive in a run and Haverstick capped off the onslaught with an RBI single to make the score 5-1.

In the home half of the fourth inning, the Warriors loaded the bases on a single from Rothenhausler, followed by back-to-back walks issued to Frey and Piatkiewicz before Stirr delivered his second RBI hit of the afternoon to stretch ESU's advantage to 6-1.

ESU added to their lead with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to make the score 8-1. With one out and runners in scoring position, Rothenhausler poked a double down the left field line to drive in a pair which put the Warriors up by seven runs.
