Men’s Track & Field Wins Eight Events at 23rd Annual DeSchriver Invitational

EAST STROUDSBURG – Hosting the 23rd Annual DeSchriver Invitational, the East Stroudsburg University men's track & field team won eight events on Sunday inside Koehler Fieldhouse and Zimbar Gymnasium.  

Taking first-place in their respective events was Caleb Carney (55m hurdles), Tyler Boone (400m), Alejandro Paez (600m), Emmanuel Gitonga (1000m), Aaron Sanchez (high jump), Cole Gorham (shot put) as well as the 4x200m and 4x400m relay teams.  

Additionally, Boone clocked a PSAC automatic qualifying time in the 400m.

Running Highlights
The Warriors opened the day on the track with a bang as Raul Esteves, Jaylen Morrison, Justin Gockley and Ben Terry captured a first place finish in the 4x200m with a time of 1:32.82.

Competing as ESU's only runner in the 5000m, Camden Shaffer secured a third place finish with a season-best time of 16:22.91.
 
ESU dominated the 55mH, recording five of the top six finishers as Carney led the way in first place with a time of 7.95. Joshua Rand (7.99) was the runner-up, followed by Bryan Rodrigues (8.17) in third, Nasir Kyle (8.38) in fourth and Liam Beifus (8.43) in sixth.

In 55m, Donavan Anderson paced the Warriors with a second place finish at 6.57 while Jack Gorham was right behind in third with a time of 6.69.  

Boone claimed the top spot in the 400m as the sophomore crossed the line in a PSAC automatic qualifying time of 50.08. A trio of Warriors would finish sixth through eighth as Trey Boyd (52.77) paced the squad, followed by Beifus (53.07) and Caleb Diaz (54.60).

As the only Warrior competing in 600m, Paez took first place with a time of 1:25.30, which ranks fourth fastest in school history.

Andrew Dowdell captured a runner-up finish in the 800m as the freshman clocked a personal-best time of 2:07.97.  

En route to a first place finish in the 1000m, Gitonga posted a time of 2:40.67.  

In the 200m, ESU posted a pair of top-10 finishes, led by Gockley in fifth with a time of 23.55 while Terry took 10th at 24.14.

ESU capped off the day in impressive fashion with relay squads taking first and third in the 4x400m. Boyd, Morrison, Rand and Zandray Thompson claimed the top spot at 3:30.28, while Evan Clark, Kyle, Diaz and Dowdell weren't far behind in third with a time of 3:37.65.  

Field Event Highlights
The Warriors secured third through fifth place finishes in the weight throw with Daryn Blackwell leading the charge in third as the senior notched a personal-best mark of 17.22m (56-6), moving him up to sixth all-time in school history.

Isaac Almoney was right behind in fourth after recording a throw of 15.98m (52-5) and Anthony Voto took fifth at 15.86m (52-0). Rounding out the finishes for ESU was Josh Meshach in ninth with a personal-best throw of 13.17m (43-3).

Sophomore Jack Gorham wasted no time in the long jump, recording a personal-best leap of 6.81m (22-4) on his first attempt for a second place finish in the event. Sanchez would take eighth with a mark of 6.41m and Sherwin Stewart rounded out the top-10 at 6.11m (20-0 ½).

In the pole vault, ESU recorded a trio of top-five finishes as Micah Cooper was the runner-up with a height of 4.20m (13-9 ¼), followed by Robert Plumb in third with a similar mark. Clark took fifth after clearing the bar at a personal-best height of 3.90m (12-9 ½).

The Warriors went 1-2-3 in the shot put as Cole Gorham claimed the top spot with a throw of 15.68m (51-5 ¼). Almoney (14.97m – 49-1 ¼) was the runner-up and Voto took third after recording a mark 14.64m (48-0 ½). William Mattei notched a seventh place finish with a toss of 13.66m (44-9 ¾) and Meshach (12.84m – 42-1 1/2) rounded out the top-10.

Stewart was back in the sand pit for the triple jump, earning a second place finish with a personal-best mark of 13.22m (43-4 ½).

On his way to a first place finish in the high jump, Sanchez leaped over the bar at a personal-best height of 2.00m (6-6 ¾), while Daniel Smith was the runner-up with a mark of 1.85m (6-0 ¾). Freshman Reece Hernandez finished in a tie for fourth at 1.75m (5-9).

The Warriors return to the road next weekend, traveling to Boston, Mass. On Friday and Saturday for the David Hemery Valentine Invitational.
