VIRGINA BEACH, VA. – East Stroudsburg University's
Donavan Anderson added another accolade to a remarkable indoor season as the freshman earned Second Team All-America honors in the long jump on day one of the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.
On his way to a ninth place finish in the event, Anderson leaped 7.22m (23-8 ¼) on his fourth attempt. The Bergenfield, N.J. native was tied with Western Colorado's Malcom Wesley but the junior recorded the same mark on second jump to take eighth place.
"Good job for the first day of competition," said head women's coach Cortney Stafford. "He (Donavan) made it to finals after being seeded 15th and just missed the podium by .04m. We're going to take these experiences and build. Tomorrow, he has another opportunity in the triple jump to continue to shine and make himself and the ESU track and field family proud, Go Warriors!"
"We are proud of the way Donavan competed the entire competition, said head men's coach
Justin Germani," "Being the only freshmen in the field and finishing as an All-American is something Donavan and Coach Stafford can be proud of. We look forward to seeing what he can do tomorrow in the triple jump."
Anderson became the 28th All-American in ESU men's track and field program history on Friday afternoon and just the second student-athlete in the long jump. Three-time All-American Rob Stone was the most recent Warrior to accomplish the feat back in 1998, as well as in 1994 and 1996.
Competing in the long jump for the final time during the indoor season, Anderson finished with the school record in the event after recording a mark of 7.44m (24-5) on his way to runner-up finish at the PSAC Championships.
