No. 11/14 Baseball Drops Midweek Game to Pace

EAST STROUDSBURG – The 11th/14th-ranked East Stroudsburg University baseball team dropped a midweek matchup to Pace, 11-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Creekview Park.   

The Warriors (18-4) trailed by one score headed into the final inning, but the Setters (15-2) put the game out of reach with six runs to help extend their win streak to five games.

Notables
  • Redshirt freshman Parker Frey (1-for-3, one walk) got ESU back within striking distance following a three-run triple in the bottom of the fifth inning
  • Redshirt junior Tim Haverstikc (0-for-2, one walk) drove in the Warriors' fourth run on a sacrifice fly
  • Victor Cruz continued to swing a hot bat as the graduate student went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple to go along with a run scored
  • Jack Rothenhausler (1-for-3, one run) pushed his on-base streak to 18 games and recorded a single in the third inning which marked his 11th straight contest with a hit
  • Following a 1-for-4 performance, junior Jeremy Piatkiewicz extended his hitting streak to eight games and has now reached base in 10 consecutive contests
  • Making his third career start, freshman Ryan Dewees suffered the loss after allowing three runs on five hits over 3.0 innings of work
  • Mike Kelly (1-for-3, one walk, one run) stole ESU's lone base of the afternoon, pushing the Warriors' season total to 84 which ranks fourth in NCAA Division II
  • In this week's rankings, ESU was No. 2 in the NCBWA Atlantic Region Poll and ascended to No. 14 in the NCBWA Top 25. The Warriors slide up to No. 11 in the College Baseball Division II Top 25 and were ranked as high as No. 9 by Perfect Game.
How it Happened – Pace 11, ESU 4
The Setters grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning as Mitchell McCabe launched a home run over the left field fence.

Pace stretched their advantage to 3-0 in the top of the third inning as McCabe produced a two-run single into right field. The Setters led off the frame with a base hit and a walk before Hunter Goldstein laid down a sacrifice bunt to put runners in scoring position.

After the Setters loaded the bases on a single, hit by pitch and a walk, Josh Miller worked a four-pitch walk to push Pace's advantage to 4-0 in the top of the fourth inning.

With two outs and a runner on first in the top of the fifth inning, Luke Jacobi laced a triple to right center field to plate Goldstein, making the score 5-0 in favor of the Setters.

ESU got on the board in the home of the inning, using a bases clearing triple from Frey to cut their deficit to 5-3. The Warriors set the table for the redshirt freshman on a single from Kelly, a walk to Piripavel and hit by pitch from Rothenhausler.

The Warriors continued to chip away at Pace's lead in the bottom of the sixth inning as a sacrifice fly from Haverstick scored Cruz to get ESU within one run at 5-4. Cruz led off the frame with a triple to the right center field gap.

Pace put the game out of reach in their last at-bats, scoring six runs on three hits in the top of the ninth inning to make the final score 11-4. Josh Miller drove in pair on a single and Matthew Rinaldi capped off the scoring with a two-run double to left field.
