BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Led by a three-run home run by
Jada Smallwood and another solid outing from
Paige Zigmund in the circle, the East Stroudsburg University softball team split a doubleheader with Bloomsburg on Tuesday afternoon at Jan M. Hutchison Stadium. ESU took game one by a score of 7-4, as the Huskies forced a split with eight unanswered runs in game two's 8-1 win for BU.
The Warriors (32-14, 20-8 PSAC East) remain a game ahead of Kutztown with the split for second-place in the PSAC East. The Huskies (18-30, 12-16 PSAC East) are now a game back of Lock Haven for the fifth and final spot in the PSAC Tournament with the split.
Notables
- Pacing the bats was Jada Smallwood, who smacked a three-run home run in game one. She drew three walks in the doubleheader and connected on a single. The round tripper for Smallwood is her seventh this season and is now tied with Rebbeca Smith (2013) and Amanda Feist (2009) for the third-most home runs in a single season at ESU.
- Molly Nies belted a pair of doubles, driving in a run in both contests. Nies and Brooke McKeown led ESU with three hits, as Mckeown crossed the plate for three runs on the day.
- Reilly Vicendese drove in a run and produced two hits, while Lexi Wright also contributed multiple hits.
- Katherine Donahgue and Kaitlin Houser each recorded an RBI in game one.
- In the circle, Paige Zigmund (W, 18-3) picked up her already school-record 18th win, pitching a complete game one. She struck out seven, while walking three. She gave up just one extra base hit, allowing three earned runs (four total).
- Leigh Ann Jenkins (L, 8-7) suffered the loss in game two. She did not allow a run until the bottom of the 4th in game two, but the Huskies were able to strike for eight runs between the fourth and sixth innings to earn the split.
- ESU remains in second place with the win and loss, holding a one-game lead of Kutztown and two games over Shippensburg. The Warriors have already clinched one of five PSAC East slots in the PSAC Tournament in Quakertown, Pa., which begins on Wednesday, May 3.
- With four regular-season games remaining, the Warriors need three victories to set a new program record for wins in a season for the third consecutive season, after a 34-win season in 2022 and a 29 win season in 2021.
How it Happened: ESU 7, Bloomsburg 4
- The Warriors struck first in its opening at bats, as McKeown singled and stole second. Nies smacked a double to score McKeown for the first run. Vicendese followed with a double herself to put runners on second and third. That setup Smallwood, who blasted a three-run home run on the 15th pitch in the at bat to extend the ESU lead to 4-0.
- After Zigmund retired the first three batters she faced, Nies smacked her second double in two innings to score McKeown with two outs in the second.
- Back-to-back RBI doubles by Houser and Donaghue lengthened the edge to 7-0 in the top of the 5th.
- The Huskies put its first tallies on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 5th. A bases clearing double by Taylor Kranzley scored Iseminger, Lenner and Persing, cutting the deficit to 7-3.
- BU was able to put up another run in the bottom of the 6th, but that wrapped up the scoring. Zigmund picked up her 18th win by the final score of 7-4.
How it Happened: Bloomsburg 8, ESU 1
- Once again, the Warriors were able to open the scoring in the top of 1st. McKeown opened game two with a single and advanced to second on a ground out. Vicendese singled home McKeown for the first run.
- The Huskies were able to tie the game and take the lead in the bottom of the 4th with an RBI single and double. After extending its lead to 3-1 in the fifth, BU took control with four runs in the bottom of the 6th. A solo home run, two RBI singles, and back-to-back RB triples resulted in four runs to lift the Huskies to an 8-1 advantage.
- Needing seven runs to extend play to the bottom of the 7th, the Warriors were able to advance Weirich to third base after a single, but she would be stranded, to split the doubleheader and season series with BU.
