Warriors Pitching Staff Combine to Allow Two Hits in 12-Inning Doubleheader Sweep of Mansfield

ESU posted a combined five inning no-hitter in game two’s 13-0 win.

STROUDSBURG – Behind strong pitching performances from Paige Zigmund, Leigh Ann Jenkins and Ariadna Cerda Bermejo – who combined to allow just two hits in 12 innings – led the  East Stroudsburg University softball team to a 7-1 win in game one and a 13-0 five-inning no-hitter in game two for the divisional sweep of Mansfield on Tuesday afternoon at Creekview Park's Vigon International Field.

With the sweep, the Warriors (21-9, 9-3 PSAC East) move into a tie for second place with West Chester in the PSAC East. The Mountaineers (9-17, 0-14 PSAC East) remain winless in conference action this season.  

ESU's three pitchers combined to hold MU to a .053 batting average, with just a single and a double in game one and had just one base runner via a walk in game two's 13-0 win. The Warriors struck out 13 Mounties and conceded just one earned run and two walks. The Warriors smacked 19 hits, including 13 in game two.

Notables
  • Five Warriors recorded multiple RBIs in the balanced offensive performance, with Reilly Vicendese and Brooke McKeown posting three RBIs to lead the squad. Denva Shaw-Tait (4-5) and Abigail Weirich (4-5, 2B) connected on four hits and two RBIs. Also contributing a pair of RBIs was Gianna Coyle.
  • Of ESU's 19 hits on the day, 16 were singles, two were doubles and a Vicendese smacked a triple.
  • Weirich scored four runs on the day, while Vicendese crossed the plate three times. Weirich led ESU with four stolen bases, with the Warriors posting 12 swipes on 12 attempts.
  • As a unit, ESU outhit MU, with a .404 batting batting average to a .053 clip by the Mounties.
  • ESU's 13 runs are the most this season and matches (twice in 2021) the most runs since scoring 16 runs in a 16-4 win at Bowie State on March 23, 2019.
  • ESU is now 78-52 all-time against the Mounties, earning six consecutive wins.
How It Happened – ESU 7, Mansfield 1
  • After a strong start by both pitcher's, ESU was able to strike first in the top of the 2nd. Weirich reached first via a hit-by-pitch, and Shaw-Tait followed with a single to spark a three-run inning. Weirich came around to score after a stolen base and a throwing error by the catcher for an unearned run. ESU added a run on a wild pitch and a passed ball, as the Warriors took a 3-0 lead.
  • The Mounties were able to get a run back in the top of the 4th. After a single and wild pitch,  a one-out double by Anastasia Berardi cut the deficit to 3-1. After a ground out for the second out, Gabby Drum got a hold of a pitch that went to deep centerfield, but Brooke McKeown was able to rob a home run to preserve the two-run lead for the Warriors.  
  • ESU added its fourth run, with Shaw-Tait crossing the plate after another Mountie wild pitch.
  • The Warriors posted its first three RBIs in the bottom of the 5th. After a hit-by-pitch, Nies came around to score on a Vicendese triple. With Vicendese on third base, Smallwood sent a sacrifice fly to right filed to score the Maryland native. After a Weirich double and stolen base, Shaw-Tait sent an RBI single to right field for the Warriors' seventh run of the opening game. ESU took a 7-1 advantage into the sixth frame.   
  • Zigmund was lights out past the fourth, not allowing a runner on base for the final three innings, retiring the final 11 batters she faced.   
How It Happened – ESU 13, Mansfield 0
  • After Jenkins retired the side in order to start the contest, ESU opened the scoring in its first at bats. After one-out singles from Nies and Vicendese, Houser smacked a sacrifice to score Nies. With two outs, Weirich was able to leg out an infield single, allowing Vicendese to score the second run of the contest.   
  • ESU's offense stayed hot, adding six runs in the top of the 2nd to take full control. Shannon Edelman led the half-inning off with a walk, with Pritchard smashing a double down the left field line to score Edelman. After a pitching change, the Warriors added its fourth run with an RBI bunt single from McKeown. Vicendese kept the rally going, smacking a two-RBI single to left center, as ESU led 6-0. The Mounties were forced to switch pitcher's once again. After a double-play resulted in two outs for ESU, the Warriors kept scoring. Weirich added its seventh run with an RBI single. ESU closed out its five-run inning with an RBI single from Denva Shaw-Tait.
  • Up 8-0, Jenkins continued to tame the Mounties. She allowed just one base runner in the third via a walk. Other than that, she was lights out, not allowing a hit in four innings of work.
  • ESU padded the lead with five runs in the bottom of the 4th. Coyle recorded a two-RBI single, Shannon Edelman posted an RBI single to score Coyle. Rounding out the scoring was a two-RBI single by McKeown, to make it a 13-0 contest.
  • Cerda-Bermejo persevered the no-hitter by retiring the side in order in the top of the 5th.
