Blackwell Earns Runner-Up Finish in Hammer Throw on Day One of PSAC Outdoor Championships

SLIPPERY ROCK – The East Stroudsburg University men's track and field team got off to an impressive start during the opening day of the 2023 PSAC Outdoor Championships on Thursday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

Daryn Blackwell highlighted the opening day of competition for ESU as the graduate student finished as the runner-up in the hammer throw with a personal-best and NCAA provisional mark of 57.23m (187-9).

In the team standings, the Warriors are in second place with 15 points while defending champion Shippensburg sits at the top with 25. Edinboro and Slippery Rock are tied for third at 11 points.

Decathlon Highlights

Through the first five events of the decathlon, senior Daniel Daley sits in ninth place with 3,130 points while Bryan Rodrigues is in 11th after accumulating 2,979 points.

Beginning the decathlon with the 100m, Daley took ninth with a personal-best time of 11.50 and Rodrigues finished 11th after crossing the line in 11.64.

Transitioning to the long jump, Rodrigues secured a seventh place finish with a mark of 6.21m (20-4 ½), while Daley was right behind in eighth at 6.19m (20-3 ¾).  

Moving into the shot put, Daley finished sixth after notching a personal-best throw of 10.34m (33-11 ¼) and Rodrigues was 11th after recording a personal-best mark at 9.08m (29-9 ½).

Closing out the field events with the high jump, Daley matched his personal-best height of 1.90m (6-2 ¾) to take third and Rodrigues finished 12th at 1.69m (5-6 ½).

Wrapping up with the 400m, Rodrigues paced the Warriors in 10th at 53.27 and Daley finished 15th after clocking a time of 56.78.

Track Highlights

Concluding the opening day of competition in the 10,000m for ESU, freshman Landon Boyle took 17th after crossing the line in 33:34.77.

Field Highlights

On his way to a second place finish in the hammer throw, Blackwell notched the third-best mark in school history. Junior Isaac Almoney took fifth at 55.63m (182-6) and Anthony Voto was in sixth with a personal-best throw of 52.34m (171-9). Voto's effort ranks ninth-best all-time in program history.
