7/17/2023 11:24:00 AM

TAMPA, Fla. – For the second consecutive season, East Stroudsburg University defensive end Deshawn McCarthy has been selected to the 2024 East West Shrine Bowl 1000, which honors the top players  among all levels of college football, the organization announced on Monday.

McCarthy, a 2021 AFCA All-America and a two-time All-PSAC East First Team selection, enters his senior season in 2023 looking to make noise on the Warrior defensive line.

Last season, McCarthy registered 36 tackles, including six sacks and 13.5 tackles for loss, which led ESU. Among the top pass rushers in program history, his 25 career sacks rank fifth all-time, just eight behind all-time leaders Des Hussey (1991) and Joe Ruedt (1992). Additionally, McCarthy is tied for ninth in program history with five forced fumbles.

McCarthy was the lone honoree from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, one of nine players from NCAA Division II and one of 83 non-Football Bowl Subdivision  representatives among the 1,000 listed student-athletes.

Every year, approximately 1000 all-star game-eligible players are drafted, signed after the draft, or attend a rookie mini-camp. The East West Shrine Bowl 1000 serves as a look into the scouting process, as well as a of preview college players who are currently all-star game eligible for the 2024 East-West Shrine Bowl and 2024 NFL Draft class.

The accolade marks the second preseason honor for the Philadelphia native, as McCarthy was named to Lindy's Sports Preseason All-Division II Team last month.

McCarthy and the Warriors open the 2023 season against Pace on Thursday, August 31 at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
