Volleyball Sweeps Kutztown to Begin Conference Play

KUTZTOWN – The East Stroudsburg University volleyball team opened PSAC East play by sweeping Kutztown on Friday night inside the Keystone Arena. The set scores were 25-12, 25-12, 25-23.

The Warriors earned their third consecutive victory to improve to 6-5 overall and 1-0 in the PSAC East while the Golden Bears dropped to 6-6 on the season and 0-1 in the conference.

Dating back to October 11, 2016, ESU has now defeated Kutztown in 13 of the last 14 meetings.

Notables vs. Kutztown
  • Redshirt senior Kaylee LoPresto finished with 10 kills and 11 digs for her first double-double of the season
  • Sophomore Anna Coulter matched the team-high with 10 kills to go along with four digs, four blocks and three aces
  • Graduate student Claire Choloux added nine kills and seven digs while senior Sydney Stone recorded seven kills
  • Reigning PSAC East Athlete of the Week Taylor Haan totaled 28 assists, five aces, five digs and a pair of blocks
  • Senior Makayla Baca (19) and junior Makaela McComas (10) combined for 29 of ESU's 57 digs
  • The Warriors finished with a .320 hitting percentage after recording 38 kills and a season-low six attack errors, while Kutztown posted a .114 clip (33 kills, 20 errors). ESU held the edge over the Golden Bears in aces (9-5) and blocks (5-1).
  • ESU improved to 59-31 all-time against the Golden Bears with the series dating back to 1975
How it Happened vs. Kutztown
  • With the score tied at 1-1 to begin the match, the Warriors scored six consecutive points using three kills, two Kutztown errors and an ace to take a 7-1 lead. The Golden Bears cut their deficit to 7-3 after straight points but ESU responded with a 5-0 spurt to extend their advantage to 12-3. Out of a Kutztown timeout, the teams traded the next four points (16-7), until the Warriors used a 3-0 run to make the score 19-7 in their favor. ESU ultimately closed out the set 25-12 to grab a 1-0 edge in the match.
     
  • There was no slowing down ESU to start the second set as the Warriors opened on a 7-0 run which included three kills from LoPresto. ESU kept its foot on the gas by scoring five of the next eight points, prompting Kutztown to take a timeout as the Golden Bears trailed 12-3. Out of the break, the Warriors continued to roll with a 7-3 spurt to stretch their lead to 19-6. The Warriors would go on to finish off the set, 25-12, giving them a 2-0 advantage over Kutztown.
     
  • ESU and Kutztown went back and forth to open the third set until the Warriors went on a 3-0 run to grab a slim edge at 7-5. The Warriors would maintain a two-point lead at 8-6, 9-7, 10-8, 12-10 and 13-11, but not before the Golden Bears scored five of the six points to jump ahead 16-14. Following a timeout, ESU clawed their way back with a 5-3 spurt to even the score at 19-19. Kutztown used a 4-1 run to go ahead 23-20 but the Warriors would score the final five points of the set to finish off the sweep of the Golden Bears.
