Chmiel Powers Women’s Basketball Past Millersville for Third Straight Win

EAST STROUDSBURG – Behind a monster performance from junior Emily Chmiel and a fourth quarter comeback, the East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team won their third consecutive game as the Warriors defeated Millersville, 65-55, on Saturday afternoon at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Snapping a five-game losing streak to the Marauders (7-11, 5-7), ESU improved to 7-10 overall and 5-7 in the conference while moving up to fourth in the PSAC East standings.

The Warriors found themselves leading 29-24 at the break but a strong third quarter by Millersville, in which the Marauders outscored ESU by 11 points (22-11), put them ahead 46-40 headed into the final period. ESU weathered the storm in the fourth quarter as the Warriors scored 25 points on 60.0 percent shooting (9-15), while holding Millersville to nine points on 23.1 percent shooting (3-13).

Chmiel could not be stopped this afternoon as the Doylestown native registered her second double-double in as many games with an ESU career-high 24 points and 13 rebounds, which included six on the offensive end, to go along with three steals and a block. The junior shot an efficient 10-for-17 (58.8%) from the field and 4-for-5 (80.0%) at the charity stripe. Since being inserted back into the starting lineup on January 17, Chmiel is averaging 13.0 points, 9.8 rebounds, 2.8 blocks and 1.5 steals while shooting 54.8 percent overall and 85.7 percent at the line in 21.4 minutes per game.

Izzy Vogel totaled double figures in back-to-back games and for the seventh time this season as the junior finished with 11 points, seven rebounds, three assists and a steal.

  • Senior Carley Adams added eight points (4-6 FG), a pair of steals and one rebound
  • Junior Katie Geisler filled up the stat sheet with seven points and seven rebounds while matching her career-high's with three assists and three steals
  • Playing all 40 minutes in three consecutive games and for the fifth time this year, junior Corrin Gill totaled six points, three rebounds, two steals and eight assists to match her season-high
  • Senior Gwenn Sabato, junior Cassidy Saylor (two rebounds) and freshman Katilin McGeary (two rebounds) each scored three points
  • Makiah Shaw led the way in scoring for the Marauders, tallying 18 points on 7-for-10 from the field, to go along with eight rebounds, two steals, one assist and a block. Sophie Elstone added 12 points, eight rebounds, three steals, one block and a steal, while Jillian Crawford poured in 11 points.
  • The Warriors finished 43.1 percent from the field (25-for-58) and 25.0 percent (2-for-8) beyond the arc while Millersville shot 39.0 percent overall (43.1) and 4-for-16 (25.0%) from long distance
  • ESU took advantage at the free throw line as the Warriors shot 13-for-18 (72.2) compared to 5-for-6 (83.3%) for Millersville
  • ESU flexed their muscles in the paint by outscoring Millersville 40-32, while also taking advantage of 20 Marauders' turnovers, which turned into 17 points
  • ESU snapped a five game losing streak to Millersville as the Warriors earned their first victory over the Marauders since February 8, 2020. Millersville maintains the advantage in the all-time series at 61-32.
How It Happened
  • Chmiel powered the Warriors through the first 4:07 of the game as she went on a personal 7-0 run until the Marauders' Shaw converted a pair of free throws. Following the media timeout, it was all Millersville as they tallied 12 of the final 19 points over 4:49 to leave the score tied at 14-14 at the end of the first quarter.
     
  • It was all ESU to start the second quarter as the Warriors regained a 21-14 lead less than two minutes in after a 7-0 run. Following a Millersville timeout, the Marauders outscored the Warriors by two points (10-8) over the final 8:10 to trim the halftime deficit to 29-24.  
     
  • After Gill opened the second half with a layup for ESU (31-24), Millersville proceeded to go on a 13-2 run over the next 4:19 to regain a 37-33 lead. The teams went back and forth to close out the third quarter the Millersville ultimately pushed their advantage to 46-40.
     
  • ESU responded immediately at the beginning of the fourth quarter as the Warriors scored the first eight points to jump back ahead 48-46. After Millersville evened the score at 48-48, it's the closest the Marauders got the rest of the way as ESU ended the game on 17-17 spurt for the 65-55 victory.
