Women’s Basketball Win Streak Snapped in Loss to Kutztown

EAST STROUDSBURG – The East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team saw its three-game win snapped as Kutztown defeated the Warriors, 52-32, in a PSAC East game on Monday night inside Koehler Fieldhouse.

The Warriors, who were limited to a season-low 32 points, dropped to 7-11 on the season and 5-8 in PSAC while the Golden Bears improved to 10-9 overall and 9-5 in the conference following their third straight win.

Notables
  • Junior Izzy Vogel led the Warriors with nine points, three rebounds, three blocks and an assist
  • Junior Katie Geisler and Emily Chmiel each registered six points while combining for five rebounds, four assists and two steals
  • In 19 minutes off the bench, senior Gwenn Sabato added three points, four rebounds and a pair of steals
  • Senior Carley Adams (two rebounds, one assist, one steal, one block), senior Leah Pishock (three rebounds, one block) and junior Cassidy Saylor (three rebounds, one block) each scored two points
  • Kutztown's Zara Zerman led all scorers with a game-high 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting overall and a 4-for-6 from three-point land to go along with five assists. She also dished out five assists. Leila Hurley finished with 16 points and three rebounds while Naia Pulliam completed the trio of Golden Bears in double figures with 13 points as well as five rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block.
  • The Warriors were limited to 13-of-48 (27.1%) shooting overall, 1-of-8 (12.5%) beyond the arc and 5-for-8 (62.5%) at the free throw line
  • Kutztown had an efficient night shooting as the Golden Bears finished 19-of-46 (41.3%) overall, 10-for-23 (43.5.%) from long distance and 4-for-4 (100.0%) at the charity stripe
  • The Golden Bears snapped a two-game losing to streak to ESU after getting swept a season ago and improved their record in the all-time series to 44-40
How It Happened
  • With Kutztown ahead 3-2 in the first minute of the game, the Warriors answered with a 7-0 run over the next 2:23 to jump in front 9-6. However, over the final 5:42 of the first quarter the Golden Bears would go on an 11-0 spurt to regain a 14-9 advantage.
     
  • Vogel knocked down a layup to start the second quarter for the Warriors, but it was all Kutztown the rest of the way as the Golden Bears outscored ESU 11-0 to extend their lead to 25-11 at the break.  
     
  • It was back and forth through the first five minutes of the third quarter as each team scored five points until Kutztown knocked down a three-pointer going into the media break to make the score 33-16. Over the final 4:27 if the period, ESU outscored the Golden Bears (8-7) by point to trim the deficit to 40-24.
     
  • ESU scored seven of the first ten points to begin the fourth quarter, trimming the Kutztown's lead to 43-31, but it's the closest the Warriors would get the rest of game as the Golden Bears earned a 20-point victory at 52-32.
