MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team opened the 2024-25 season with a 1-0 start under Coach Flooks, holding off a late fourth-quarter surge by Virginia Union in Pucillo Gymnasium.
Notables:
- Emily Chmiel (Pictured Above) recorded her first double-double of the season in the opener, scoring 20 points and grabbing 11 rebounds on 57.1 percent shooting. Chmiel also had two blocks and two assists.
- Izzy Vogel put up 12 points, made all six of her free throws, and added two steals.
- Corrin Gill totaled four rebounds, three points, and three assists, which tied the game high.
- Taniyah Greene of Virginia Union posted a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
- Fellow Panther Maia Charles added 11 points and seven rebounds. Teammate Rori Cox finished with 11 points and five steals.
- ESU held the Panthers to 30.6 percent shooting from the floor and 20.0 percent from three-point range.
- The Warriors capitalized on turnovers, outscoring Virginia Union 20-15 on points off turnovers.
- There were only two lead changes. Once ESU took a 6-5 lead 4:38 into the game, they never relinquished it.
How It Happened:
The Warriors maintained a steady lead throughout the game, building a 14-point advantage entering the final quarter. The Panthers fought back to make it a two-possession game with 2:02 remaining. They cut the lead to one possession, but only on a three-pointer as time expired.
