ESU Falls in Close Matchup at Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team fell 61-55 to Staten Island on Sunday in a tight contest that saw five ties and seven lead changes over four quarters.
 
Notables:
  • Emily Chmiel entered the game tied for third in Division II with four double-doubles (two players had five) and recorded her fifth of the season, putting up 20 points and 11 rebounds. She also had two steals and a block.
  • Brie Droege (Pictured Above) scored 13 points on 62.5% shooting. Brooke Droege contributed eight points, shooting a perfect 4 of 4 from the floor.
  • Despite shooting 16.2% better from the floor, 15.5% better from the free-throw line, and making six more baskets, Staten Island had the edge in three-point shooting (7-1), free throws made (20-8), and second-chance points (16-8).
 
How it Happened: After an early three by the Dolphins, the Warriors went on a 10-2 run to go up 12-5 and ended the quarter on a 5-0 run to lead 17-8. ESU increased its lead to 11, but Staten Island didn't back down, shooting 57.1% from three and eventually taking the lead 28-27 on back-to-back threes. The Warriors retook the lead at halftime, 31-28. In the second half, Staten Island took a four-point lead late in the third quarter. With 1:36 left, Brie Droege hit a three, and Chmiel scored four points off two free throws and a layup to give ESU a 47-44 lead entering the final quarter. After a quick bucket by Brooke Droege to increase the lead to five, the Dolphins went on a 14-0 run to go up by nine. ESU made it a two-possession game with under two minutes to go but ultimately couldn't come back.

Up Next: The Warriors will look to bounce back at home on Dec. 6 to face Edinboro in a PSAC showdown at 3 p.m.
