Warriors' Comeback Falls Short, Chmiel Scores Career-High 34 Points

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team (3-4, 0-2) mounted a 14-point comeback to tie the game late but fell 69-63 to California (Pa.) (5-5, 2-2).


Notables

Emily Chmiel again had an incredible performance with her third straight 20+ point double-double. This time, she scored a career-high 34 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds while blocking three shots, getting a steal, and shooting 62.5% from the floor. It was the first 30-point, 15-rebound double-double since at least 2002-03 for a Warrior.

Lacie Kringe shot 50% from the field for 11 points, adding four rebounds, four assists, three steals, and a block.

Corrin Gill (pictured above) had a team-high six assists, scored six points, and shot 50% from three-point range.

One of the biggest differences in the game was Cal U's advantage in fast-break points (18-6) and points off turnovers (28-10), though ESU led in points in the paint (40-30).


How it Happened
In the first quarter, the Vulcans came out fast, taking an 8-0 lead and eventually going up 13-4. ESU outscored Cal U for the remainder of the quarter, closing on an 11-6 run to reduce the deficit to five. The second quarter leaned in Cal U's direction as they led 39-26 at the half. The Warriors chipped away at the Cal U lead, opening the second half with a 14-4 run to pull within three at 43-40, capped by a Jessica Polin three-pointer off a Brie Droege steal. Cal U closed out the third on a 12-7 run to lead 55-47. The final quarter was the closest of the game as the Vulcans increased their lead to 62-51 with six minutes to play. ESU responded with a 12-1 run to tie the game at 63-63 with 1:40 remaining, thanks to a Chmiel layup off an assist from Corrin Gill. With 37 seconds left, Cal U took the lead off free throws and held on to win 69-63.
