Late Heroics Lifts No. 5 Nova Southeastern to Sweep of No. 6 ESU

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – In a rematch from the NCAA Softball Championships a season ago, No. 5 Nova Southeastern scored two runs in the bottom of the 7th inning in game two to walk off with a sweep of the No. 6 East Stroudsburg University softball team on Sunday afternoon at AD Griffin Complex.

The Warriors (3-3) dropped game one to the Sharks (6-2), 9-1. ESU fell 5-4 to NSU in game two.

Notables

  • Reilly Vicendese led the Warriors with three hits on the afternoon (3-7) and scored a run. The senior third baseman now has a .429 batting average in six contests, leading ESU in hits (9) and is tied with Abigail Weirich with five runs scored.
  • Jada Smallwood produced two runs to open the scoring in game two, smacking a two-RBI single to open the scoring in the top of the 1st.
  • Delaney Ridgell went 2-3 in game two, lifting the Warriors to a 3-2 lead with an RBI triple during the third inning.
  • Denva Shaw-Tait smacked a pair of singles in game one, extending ESU's lead in game two with a sacrifice fly.
  • Abigail Weirich scored two runs in the second game against the Sharks, belting a triple in game two.
  • Maddy Pritchard smacked an RBI lineout in game one.
  • Paige Zigmund (L, 2-1) saw her scoreless streak snapped at 16 innings to open the season. Despite allowing eight earned runs and nine hits, she holds a 2.95 ERA on the season and a .222 batting average against.
  • Sarah Davenport (L, 1-2) nearly earned a victory against a top-five team in the nation in just her third career start. She allowed 11 hits (one extra-base hit) and struck out six, giving up five earned runs. On the season, Davenport has struck out 20 batters in 17 innings, holding an ERA of 2.88 and a batting average against of .286 against tough competition.
How It Happened – Game One
  • Zigmund tossed a pair of scoreless innings in her third start in three days, extending her scoreless streak to 16 innings before NSU scored the first runs of the doubleheader in the bottom of the 3rd. After stranding a combined three runners in the first two frames, NSU scored three runs on four hits and an error. A leadoff triple started the rally, with an RBI single, and RBI triple and an RBI single accounting for the runs. The Bethlehem native avoided further damage, stranding three Sharks on base.
  • The Warrior offense posted a run in the top of the 5th, with Kaitlin Houser leading the frame off. Shaw-Tait followed with another single. Shannon Harvey loaded the bases with a one-out single. As a pinch-hitter, Maddy Pritchard cut the deficit to two with a lineout, as Houser scored on the play.
  • NSU retook a three-run lead in the bottom half of the fifth inning, capitalizing on an error.
  • The Warriors had an opportunity to cut into the deficit in the top of the 6th, with Vicendese opening the inning with a single. She then stole second and advanced to third on a fly ball. A popout and strikeout would strand Vicendese at third base.
  • NSU scored five runs in the bottom of the 6th, ending the contest, 9-1, in the bottom of the 6th.
 
How It Happened – Game Two
  • The Warriors regrouped and took the first lead of the game in the top of the 1st. With runners on second and third base with one out, Smallwood whacked a two-RBI single to score Weirich and Vicendese.
  • NSU evened the score in its first at-bats. A fielder's choice and a bunt single provided the runs for the Sharks.
  • ESU once again took a two-run lead in the top of 3rd, with Weirich thumping a leadoff triple. With one out, Ridgell followed with a triple herself to lift ESU to a 3-2 advantage. Shaw-Tait sent a flyout to centerfield to score Ridgell, as the Warriors grabbed a 4-2 lead on the scoreboard.
  • NSU cut ESU's lead to a single run in the bottom of the 4th. With the bases juiced and one out, a sacrifice fly made the contest a 4-3 ESU lead. Davenport avoided further damage with a groundout.
  • Holding a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the 7th, NSU started the inning with runners on first and second with two singles. A sacrifice bunt moved the potential game-tying and game-winning runs into scoring position. With one out, another bunt would score the game-tie the contest at 4-4. The Sharks walked off victors with a single to centerfield to complete the comeback.
