Women’s Basketball Unable to Overcome Slow Start at Shippensburg

EAST STROUDSBURG – The East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team was unable to overcome a slow start in the first quarter as the Warriors suffered a 55-45 setback to Shippensburg in a PSAC game on Saturday afternoon inside Heiges Field House.

ESU endured their sixth straight loss, dropping to 7-16 overall and 5-13 in the league while the Raiders improved to 5-20 on the season and 4-15 in the PSAC. With four games remaining, the Warriors maintain hold of the No. 6 seed in the standings with a marquee game set for Wednesday against Bloomsburg (7-17, 5-23), who ESU defeated earlier this season back on January 24 (51-43).

Notables
  • Making her second straight start senior Gwenn Sabato was had a team-high 10 points to go with a season-high six rebounds, two steals, one assist and a block
  • Junior Emily Chmiel matched Sabato with 10 points as well as six rebounds and three blocks
  • Izzy Vogel added seven points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals while senior Carley Adams finished with six points, three rebounds, one steal and a block
  • Junior Corrin Gill (four assists, one rebound) and freshman Lacie Kringe each scored three points while senior Leah Pishock (two rebounds), junior Kaite Geisler (one rebound, one steal) and sophomore Adrine Demirciyan (two rebounds) all registered two points
  • Shippensburg's Treasure George (four rebounds, three assists, three steals) poured in a game-high 16 points and Abbie Miller (eight rebounds, four steals, two blocks) added 15 points
  • After shooting 1-for-14 (7.14%) in the first quarter, ESU finished the game 13-for-52 (25.0%) overall as the Raiders went 17-for-57 (29.8%) from the field
  • The three-point shot didn't favor either team as ESU (1-for-13) and Shippensburg (1-for-12) combined to go 2-for-25 (8.0%)
  • It was the exact opposite at the charity stripe for both teams as the Warriors shot 90 percent (18-for-20) compared to 77 percent (20-for-26) for Shippensburg
  • ESU and Shippensburg split the season series, but the the Raiders maintain the edge in the all-time series 42-21
How It Happened
  • Shippensburg raced out to a 12-0 lead in the first quarter until Geisler knocked down a jumper at the 2:22 mark to make the score 12-2 at the end of the period.
     
  • In the second quarter, ESU trimmed the deficit to seven points at 15-8 and 17-10 but the Raiders ultimately went into halftime with 25-15 advantage.  
     
  • With Shippensburg holding a 31-20 lead at the 7:25 mark in the third quarter, ESU went on a 6-0 spurt to pull within five points at 31-26. Out of the media break, the Raiders scored five quick points (36-26), but the Warriors answered right back with a 6-0 run cut Shippensburg's lead to 36-32. However, the Raiders poured in the final five points of the period to regain a 41-32 edge.
     
  • The Warriors would get as close as nine points (52-43, 54-45) in the fourth quarter as Shippensburg outscored ESU in the period by one point (14-13) to hold on to the 55-45 victory.
