BETHLEHEM – Powered by conference titles from Tyler Boone (400m), Cole Gorham (shot put) and the 4x400m relay team, the East Stroudsburg University men's track and field team finished in third place at the 2024 PSAC Indoor Championships on Monday at Rauch Fieldhouse.
ESU put together a huge day two after sitting in fifth place following yesterday as the Warriors totaled 92 points to register a top-3 finish in their seventh consecutive conference championship. Shippensburg won the indoor title for the 14th straight season and Slippery Rock finished as the runner-up.
It marked the first time since the 2012 indoor championships that the Warriors won at least three events (Ian Melhorn (200), Kyle Soden (HJ), Dan Johnson (Heptathlon)).
Boone captured just the second 400m indoor title in program history and first in 13 years as the junior clocked a time of 50.10 in Heat 2 to score 10 points for the Warriors. Negus Graham was the most recent Warrior to take home the title at the 2011 championships.
Gorham returns to the Poconos with the second indoor shot put title in school history as the junior recorded a school-record-tying throw of 17.71m (58-1 ¼) on his first attempt. Gorham matched a 45-year-old mark set by three-time All-American Paul Ferency back in 1979 and extended his NCAA provisional mark, which currently ranks 11th in NCAA Division II.
Boone, Renaco Limberg, Jaylen Morrison and Miguel Charlery closed out the meet with a bang as the quartet captured ESU's first 4x400m title since 2013 after clocking a time of 3:20.00 in Heat 3. Keith Parker-Washington, William Berry, Damien Boham and Mike Saparito were the last Warriors to win the event.
Drew Domurat was not afraid of the bright lights as the freshman finished second place in the high jump after clearing the bar at a NCAA provisional height of 2.06m (6-9) on his final attempt.
Running Highlights
Charlery took seventh place in the 60m after clocking a time of 6.99 and returned to the track with vengeance for the 200m as the sophomore finished as runner-up with a mark of 22.07.
Alongside Boone on the podium for the 400m was Limberg as the freshman took sixth overall after crossing the line in 50.68.
On his way to a fifth-place finish in the 60m hurdles, senior Kobe Jenkins clocked a time of 8.43 to earn four team points for ESU.
Freshman Tim Gale took sixth in the 800m after running a 1:56.22 in Heat 2 to score three points for ESU.
In the 3000m, sophomore Landon Boyle posted a 14th-place finish after running a personal-best time of 8:58.55.
Field Highlights
On his way to a runner-up finish in the high jump, Domurat cleared 1.83m, 1.88m, 1.93m, 1.98m and 2.03m all on his first attempt before leaping over the bar at a personal-best 2.06m (6-9), which ranks tied for sixth all-time in school history. Daniel Smith landed on the podium in fifth as the sophomore cleared a personal-best mark of 1.98m (6-6). Junior Aaron Sanchez (10th – 1.93m) and sophomore Jaden Johnson (11th – 1.93m) also competed for the Warriors.
In the triple jump, Johnson notched a third-place finish after recording a mark of 14.33m (47-0 1/4) on his third attempt and junior John Gorham took eighth place after leaping 13.88m. Freshman Nasir Heard (13.02m – 42-8 ¾) finished in 15th place in his PSAC championship debut.
Joining Gorham on the podium for the shot put was sophomore Anthony Voto and senior Will Mattei Jr. in fifth and sixth place respectively. Voto posted a throw of 16.02m (52-6 ¾) and Mattei recorded a personal-best mark of 15.66m (51-4 ½), which ranks eighth all-time in the program record books.
