STROUDSBURG – Behind pitching performances that combined to allow just an unearned run on the day and recorded 17 strikeouts in 14 innings, the No. 14 East Stroudsburg University softball team extended its winning streak to 15 with a 6-1, 1-0 doubleheader sweep of Southern New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon at Creekview Park's Vigon International Field.
The Warriors improved to 18-4 entering the conference slate against Kutztown on Tuesday. The Penmen (8-8) see their three-game winning streak snapped.
Pitching Notables
- After becoming ESU's all-time wins leader in her previous start against Wilmington, Paige Zigmund (W, 10-1) registered her 46th career victory with her eighth straight win. In seven innings, Zigmund scattered nine hits, allowing just one extra-base hit. She struck out six and allowed just one unearned run, stranding eight Penmen on base. Zigmund lowered her ERA to 1.38, allowing just six earned runs over her past nine starts.
- Abbie Landrum started game two of the twin bill, allowing just one hit in 2.1 innings of action as the opener. She fired one strikeout and walked just one batter.
- Sarah Davenport (W, 8-2) earned her eighth victory by not allowing a hit in 4.2 innings of action. She punched out 10 of the 15 batters she faced, while conceding just a single walk. On the season, she has now has 81 strikeouts in 52.2 innings. She has earned wins in seven consecutive appearances.
- The trio held the Penmen to a .196 batting average and two extra-base hits on the day, tossing 17 strikeouts and just two walks.
Batting Notables
- Abigail Weirich led ESU's offense, going 4-6 with two doubles, two RBIs, and three runs scored, including successful steals on all three of her attempts. She scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the 6th of game two in the 1-0 victory.
- Delaney Ridgell (3-6) and Shannen Edelman (2-6) both produced two runs. Ridgell connected on a pair of triples and registered the eventual game-winning RBI in game two with a single.
- Maddy Pritchard (2-5, 2B) and Taylor Lipkins (2-6) both smacked multiple hits on the day.
- Katie Master (3B) and Reilly Vicendese (2B) both scored a run and blasted an extra-base hit.
The Streak
- The Warriors' 15-game winning streak is the second longest in program history. A sweep over the Golden Bears on Tuesday will match the program's longest streak of 17 consecutive wins set in 2022.
- The streak is the third-longest active winning streak in NCAA DII, trailing only MSU Denver (20) and Pittsburg State (19).
How It Happened – Game One
- After Zigmund allowed a one-out double, she fired a pair of punchouts to get out of the top of the 1st unscathed.
- The bats started strong for the Warriors, taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st. Weirich smacked an RBI to score Lipkins, who opened the game with a single. Weirich stole both second and third base, before Edelman sent her home with a ground out.
- ESU added a run in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Vicendese started the rally with a double. She scored another two-bagger, with Weirich producing the run. The Warriors led 3-0 after three frames.
- In the bottom of the 5th, the Warriors scored two runs to take a 5-0 advantage. It was another two-out rally started with a double, with Weirich connecting on her second two-base hit of the day. Edelman sent Weirich across the plate with an RBI single to right field. Ridgell smacked her first of two triples of the day next, with pinch-runner Maddin Grow crossing the plate on the play.
- The Warriors wrapped up its scoring with a run in the bottom of the 6th. Master blasted a triple with two outs. An errant throw by the Penmen's third baseman allowed Master to score.
- With three outs remaining, SNHU broke up the shutout. After an error and single with no outs, a groundout advanced both runners. A sacrifice fly scored an unearned run. With two outs, a groundout to the shortstop wrapped up the contest in favor of the Warriors, 6-1.
How It Happened – Game Two
- It was a pitcher's duel in game two throughout. Landrum retired the side in order, while Lipkins walked and stole second, but could not score in the bottom of the 1st.
- Both teams put a runner on base in the second frame, with zero runs able to cross home plate.
- Landrum conceded a one-out double in the top of the 3rd, as Davenport entered the game with one out and a runner on second. She fired a strikeout and forced a flyout to avoid damage.
- With Davenport not allowing a hit and just one base runner via walk over the final 4.2 innings, ESU was able to score the lone run of the game in the bottom of the 6th. Weirich reached base with her fourth hit of the afternoon, beating out an infield single. After stealing second, she was able to score on a two-out single from Ridgell.
- Needing three outs to record her eighth win of the season, Davenport tallied two strikeouts and a flyout for the combined shutout with Landrum. Davenport successfully retired the final eight Penmen she faced.
