Women’s Basketball Drops PSAC First Round Game at Millersville

MILLERSVILLE – The fifth-seeded East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team saw its 2023-24 campaign come to an end on Monday night as fourth-seeded Millersville handed the Warriors a 59-52 loss in a PSAC Tournament first round game inside Pucillo Gymnasium.  

The Warriors finished their 97th season in program history 10-18 overall and 8-14 in the PSAC while the Marauders (13-16, 10-12) advanced to face top-seeded Lock Haven on Wednesday night in the PSAC Quarterfinals.

ESU entered the fourth quarter leading Millersville by one point (41-40) but were outscored over the final 10 minutes by eight points (19-11).

Seniors Carley Adams, who missed today's game, Leah Pishock and Gwenn Sabato played their final game in an ESU uniform. Sabato registered 11 points, three rebounds and one assist in 26 minutes while Pishock added two rebounds and one assist in her second straight start.

Notables
  • In 23 minutes off the bench, junior Katie Geisler poured in a season-high 14 points to go along with four rebounds, one steal and one block
  • Fellow classmate Cassidy Saylor finished just shy of a double double as the junior added nine points, eight points and one assist
  • Reigning PSAC East Athlete of the Week Emily Chmiel totaled eight points, four rebounds and one block in 13 minutes of the bench
  • Junior Izzy Vogel notched six points, nine rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block while fellow classmate Corrin Gill matched her season-high with eight assists
  • The Marauders were led by a pair of double figure scorers including Jabria Ingram (two rebounds, five assists, two steals, one block) with 15 points and Makiah Shaw (four rebounds, one assist) with 14 points. Sophie Elstone added nine points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals and one steal.
  • ESU finished at 37.9 percent (22-58) from the field, 16.7 percent (2-12) beyond the arc and 75.0 percent (6-8) at the free throw line
  • The Marauders shot 37.5 percent (24-64) overall, 23.1 percent (3-13) from long distance and 57.1 percent (8-14) at the charity stripe
  • Points off turnovers proved to be a difference maker as the Marauders turned 13 ESU miscues into 13 points while the Warriors scored four points on nine Millersville turnovers
  • Millersville eliminated ESU in the PSAC Tournament for the second straight year and the Warriors dropped to 10-20 all-time in the postseason
How It Happened
  • Millersville started the game with momentum as the Marauders opened a 6-0 lead before Kringe converted a layup to get ESU on the board. After the Warriors pulled with two points at 6-4, Millersville went on a 6-2 run over the next 1:56 to regain a 12-6 edge. Over the final 2:42 of the first quarter, both teams scored four points with Millersville maintaining a 16-10 lead.
     
  • The Marauders started the second quarter by scoring the first three points before ESU battled back with a 7-3 spurt to cut the deficit to 22-17. Out of the media timeout, Millersville recorded the first two points, however the Warriors ended the half on a 10-2 run to take their first lead of the game at 27-26.
     
  • Millersville made adjustments out of the locker room as the Marauders scored six of the first eight points to regain a 32-29 lead. ESU settled in following a timeout as four quick points from Chmiel put the Warriors back ahead, but Millersville responded with an 8-4 run over a five minute span to go up 40-37. ESU closed out the third quarter strong as the Warriors got back-to-back layups from Vogel and Geisler to take a one-point lead (41-40) into the final 10 minutes.
     
  • The Warriors carried over momentum into the fourth quarter as three straight points extended the lead to 44-40 with 9:12 on the clock, but Millersville would get within one at 44-43 and 46-45 until a three-pointer from Elstone knotted the score at 48-48. It was all Millersville across the final 5:20 of the contest as the Marauders proceeded to outscore ESU by seven points (11-4) and force the Warriors into five turnovers to secure the victory.
