No. 10 Baseball Falls Twice at West Chester

WEST CHESTER – The 10th-ranked East Stroudsburg University baseball team dropped the final two games of a PSAC East series to West Chester, 2-1 and 9-2, on Saturday afternoon at Serpico Stadium.

The Warriors slipped to 35-9 overall and 23-5 in the PSAC East while the Golden Rams improved to 35-7 on the season and 21-7 in the conference. ESU maintained its lead at the top spot of the Eastern Division standings as Millersville's (35-9, 21-5) doubleheader today at Shepherd was postponed.

  • Gavin Sopko earned the no-decision in the opener as the freshman pitched 5.0 innings allowing one run on three hits to go along with two strikeouts
  • Fellow classmate Carson Renner pitched a scoreless inning in relief while Nick McAuliffe (4-1) suffered the loss in his first appearance on the mound since March 22 as the redshirt senior yielded one run on two hits and one walk
  • Peyton Brannock (4-2) was tagged with the loss in the series finale as the freshman surrendered five runs on one hit and four walks across 0.1 innings pitched
  • Jaden Newton (1.1 innings), Caden Parker (1.2 innings), Greg Wiley (0.2 innings), Jake Albert (0.2) and Ryan Iberer (1.0 innings) appeared in relief
How it Happened – WCU 2, ESU 1
The Warriors grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Rothenhausler delivered an RBI single through the left side to score Wall, who reached with on a single and moved into scoring position on a stolen base.

West Chester got the run back in the bottom of the second inning as Julian Costa produced a two-out single to left field to plate Avery Spencer, making the score 1-1.

The Golden Rams walked it off in the bottom of the seventh inning as the first two batters reached before advancing on a wild pitch and ultimately coming around to score on a single through the right side off the bat of Evan Profy.

How it Happened – WCU 9, ESU 2
In the bottom of the first inning, West Chester raced out to a 5-0 lead using one hit, a hit by pitch and four walks. Sean Szestowicki walked with the bases loaded and Vaughn followed with a bases clearing triple, before scoring on the play via a throwing error by ESU.

The Golden Rams extended their advantage to 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning following a Warriors' miscue as Joe Kaleck singled through the right side before Profy advanced home on the error.

ESU scratched across their first run of the series finale in the top of the fifth inning as Frey singled to right field and advanced to second on a fielding error before coming around to score on an RBI base hit off the bat of Haverstick.

West Chester regained an eight-run lead at 9-1 in the bottom half of the frame as Casey Vaughan brought home Spencer on a single to center field before a wild pitch and a fielding error pushed across two additional runs.

In the top of the sixth inning, Haverstick knocked in his second run of the game on an RBI single to cut WCU's lead to 9-2.

ESU begins the final week of the regular season on Thursday as the Warriors travel to Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, Pa. for a doubleheader against Kutztown, beginning at 10:35 a.m.
