STROUDSBURG – The 15th ranked East Stroudsburg University softball team scored its most runs since 2005 in game one and used dominant pitching in game two to earn a 20-2, 6-1 sweep of Mansfield on Sunday afternoon at Creekview Park's Vigon International Field.
The Warriors (29-7, 11-3 PSAC East) extended its winning streak to five and have won eight of its past nine contests to remain in first place in the PSAC East. The Mountaineers (10-14, 1-13 PSAC East) have fallen in 10 consecutive contests.
Batting Notables
- ESU's bats were on fire from the bottom of the 1st in game one, compiling a .476 batting average in both contests with a season-high 18 hits.
- Reilly Vicendese (5-6) smacked five singles and scored four runs, and drove in three Warriors. She also walked twice to post an .875 on-base percentage on the day.
- Kaitlin Houser (2-3) smacked a home run and produced four total runs in game one.
- Also driving in four runs on the day was Abigail Weirich, who went 3-5 at the plate with two doubles. She scored three runs and stole two bases on two attempts.
- Delaney Ridgell (4-6) belted a triple and double and drove in two runs.
- Taylor Lipkins (3-6, 2B), Samantha Derickson (2-5, HR) and Katie Master (1-3, 3B) all drove in a pair of runs.
Pitching Notables
- The trio of Paige Zigmund (W, 14-3), Abbie Landrum and Sarah Davenport (W, 14-3) combined to allow just three earned runs and eight hits, while firing 24 strikeouts to just one walk.
- Zigmund pitched all five innings in game one, allowing four hits and two earned runs, which came off solo home runs. She tossed 10 strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
- Landrum pitched the first two innings of game two, allowing a pair of hits and a run.
- Davenport entered the contest in the top of the third and struck out 13 of the 17 batters she faced. She allowed two singles and did not walk a batter in her ESU freshman record 14th win. She is just six strikeouts away from breaking the freshman program record of 166 strikeouts set by Katie Zaun in 2022.
History
- ESU's 20 runs in game one set a new program record for runs in a conference game and are tied for the fourth most in program history. The 20 runs are tied for the most runs by a Warrior team since ESU pushed across 23 runs against Shaw in 2005. ESU's program record of 33 runs came against Franklin & Marshall in 1975.
- ESU blasted 18 hits in game one, which is tied for the fifth most in a single game in program history. The Warrior program-record of 20 hits came at Mansfield in 2006.
- Sarah Davenport recorded her 14th win in game two, which sets a new freshman program record. Tina Morak (13-20) previously held the record of 13 wins as a first-year player in 2000.
How It Happened – Game 1
- After Zigmund struck out the side in order, ESU jumped to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the 1st.
- Lipkins opened the inning with a single, as the Georgian Court transfer stole second base. Weirich smacked an RBI double for the first run. Weirich then stole second base, as Ridgell drove her home with an RBI single. After a strikeout, Houser blasted her first home run of the season to lift the Warriors to a 4-0 lead early.
- The Warriors exploded for 12 runs on 10 hits and took advantage of a Mansfield error to take a 16-0 edge. Vicendese (RBI single), Weirich (2 RBI double), an error, Houser (2 RBI single), Master (2 RBI triple), Lipkins (RBI single) Holly Soto (RBI single), wild pitch, and an Edelman RBI single lifted ESU to the large lead.
- Mansfield instantly responded with back-to-back solo home runs to make it a 16-2 contest.
- Derickson extended ESU's advantage back to 16 runs after a two-run home run in the bottom of the 3rd.
- Ridgell smacked an RBI triple and Kylie Ingram plated a run with a single to lift ESU to the final score of 20-2 in the bottom of the 4th.
- Zigmund tossed her ninth and 10th strikeout in the fifth and final frame to earn her 14th victory.
How It Happened – Game 2
- Mansfield opened the scoring in its first at bats in game two. After a one-out walk and single, a fielder's choice that was nearly a double-play allowed the first run to score.
- The Warriors tied the contest in the bottom of the 1st with an RBI single by Weirich. A fielding error allowed a pair of additional Warriors to score in the bottom of the 1st to take a 3-1 lead.
- Landrum allowed a single in the top of the 2nd but forced a fly out to keep the two-run lead.
- Vicendese smacked a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the 2nd, with ESU taking a 4-1 lead.
- Davenport entered the game in the top of the 3rd and dominated, allowing just two singles over the final five innings.
- The Warriors added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the 6th with two outs. Lipkins smacked an RBI double, while Vicendese belted an RBI single to wrap up the scoring.
