GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The East Stroudsburg University men's soccer team picked up its first win of the season, downing Adelphi 5-1 on Saturday evening at Motamed Field.
The Warriors (1-0-1) earned the victory after tying Mercy in their season opener. The Panthers dropped to 1-2-1.
Five different Warriors found the back of the net in the win, with freshmen Drew Nyce and Ryan Kiernan each scoring their first collegiate goals. All three of ESU's captains contributed to the scoring, with Ignasi Cucurella Tuset, Nathan Bradway and Pieter Neerhof all registering goals.
Notables
- Cucurella Tuset finished the day with four points, adding assists on Nyce's and Kiernan's goals before scoring himself. ESU led 3-0 within a minute of the second half starting. The native of Barcelona now has eight goals and nine assists in his career for 25 points.
- Cayetano Diaz and Jose Rivera also registered assists.
- ESU led 13-10 in shots and 9-4 in shots on goal. Adelphi held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
- GK Helgi Hermannsson made four saves while allowing the lone goal.
- The Warriors' five goals are the most since defeating Shepherd by an identical 5-1 score last season.
How It Happened
- Nyce opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, firing in his first career goal off an assist from Cucurella Tuset.
- ESU quickly padded its lead, with fellow freshman Kiernan depositing a pass from Cucurella Tuset just 22 seconds after Nyce's goal.
- Less than a minute into the second half, Cucurella Tuset scored with fellow Spaniard Diaz assisting.
- Bradway scored his ninth career goal and first of 2024 with an unassisted tally in the 54th minute.
- Adelphi's Victor Castel countered to avoid a shutout for the Panthers, as Sam Nolan sent a pass to Castel for the lone Panther goal in the 59th minute.
- Neerhof capped the scoring, connecting on a pass from Rivera in the 65th minute.
