GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Despite holding a 44-12 edge in shots and an 18-5 advantage in shots on goal, No. 3 East Stroudsburg University field hockey was deadlocked with Adelphi in the fourth quarter before Kayla Minkon registered the game-winning goal with just over three minutes remaining, lifting the Warriors to a 5-4 victory on Sunday afternoon at Motamed Field.
The Warriors (6-1) secured their fifth consecutive win in the thriller, while the Panthers fell to 1-5 on the season.
Notables
- Allyson Forman paced the offense with two goals. Bella Viruet, Minke Klijn, and Minkon also scored. Minkon, Klijn, and Jady van Gils each recorded assists.
- Leading Adelphi's offense was Lana Mignon de Wet, who finished with two goals and an assist. Amanda Lee and Ali Nagy also found the back of the cage for AU.
- In addition to their edge in shots and shots on goal, the Warriors held a significant advantage in penalty corners (16-8).
- Adelphi goalkeeper Taylor Szmak made an impressive 12 saves to keep the Panthers in the contest.
- ESU goalkeepers Jet Vermeulen and Sydney Pope split halves once again. Vermeulen made a save in the first half, while Pope picked up the win.
How It Happened
- The Panthers opened the scoring less than two minutes into the non-conference tilt when Lee converted a pass from Jillian Richie. ESU quickly responded just over a minute later with Forman scoring on a penalty corner, assisted by Minkon and van Gils.
- The Warriors carried the momentum into the second quarter, taking a 3-1 lead after goals from Viruet and Forman. ESU held a 3-2 advantage at halftime.
- After the intermission, Mignon de Wet tied the game in the 32nd minute. Klijn then put ESU back on top early in the fourth quarter, but Adelphi quickly responded, with Nagy netting the Panthers' fourth goal.
- With the game tied 4-4 and less than four minutes remaining, Minkon scored on a penalty corner opportunity to give the Warriors their fifth straight win.
