ALLENTOWN, Pa. – After a night of rainfall, the East Stroudsburg University tennis team and athletic department had to adapt to ensure its home opener against D'Youville was played on Sunday. The Warriors and Saints traveled nearly 40 miles to Winning Touch Tennis' indoor facility in Allentown.
ESU (2-1) downed D'Youville (1-4), 4-2, and has now posted wins in back-to-back matches for the first time since the 2018-19 season. It also marks their first victory over an NCAA Division II program since 2019.
How It Happened – Doubles
- After arriving in Allentown, Bega Gotor and Samantha Passmore opened the day with a win against D'Youville's Yelizaveta Prokopenk and Emiliia Soloviova in No. 3 doubles (6-0).
- The Saints earned a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles with Louise Boyer-Vidal and Ariel Kelsick falling to Mina Randjelovic and Yuliia Kashtelian.
- With No. 2 doubles deciding the doubles point, Gianina Speranza and Claudia Ermina secured a 1-0 lead for the Warriors with a clutch 6-4 triumph.
How It Happened – Singles
- D'Youville evened the contest when Kashtelian earned a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 over Boyer-Vidal.
- The Saints took their first lead of the match as Randjelovic earned a 6-2, 6-3 win against Kelsick at No. 1 singles.
- Speranza tied the match at 2-2. The Vineland, N.J., native registered a 6-2, 7-5 win over Paola Ermina.
- Bega Gotor came from behind to lift ESU to a 3-2 edge with a 3-6, 7-5, 10-4 tiebreak thriller at No. 3 singles.
- ESU's final completed match at the Lehigh Valley facility was at No. 5, where Claudia Ermina recorded a 6-0, 6-1 win over Prokopenk. The Warriors won two matches in two days for the first time since March 10-11, 2019, against Stockton and Shepherd.
