SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — The East Stroudsburg University women's basketball team lost 69-70 in a close game against Shippensburg at Heiges Field House on Wednesday night.
The Warriors (6-9, 3-6) held an eight-point lead entering the final quarter of play but fell in part due to the Raiders' (7-9, 4-6) shooting 10-of-10 from the free-throw line to take the one-point victory.
Notables:
Brie Droege (pictured above) reached 20+ points for the first time in her career, scoring a career-high and game-high 24 points on 69.2% shooting from the floor and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. She also tallied six rebounds, a game-high three steals, one block, and an assist.
Emily Chmiel narrowly missed her 12th double-double of the season, finishing with 22 points and nine rebounds. She also had two assists, one steal, one block, shot 53.3% from the field, and made all six of her free throws.
ESU has now shot better from 3-point range than its opponents in three straight games
How It Happened:
Trailing 13-8 in the first quarter, ESU went on a 6-0 run, led by pull-up jumpers from
Lacie Kringe and
Brooke Droege, along with a pair of free throws by Chmiel. In the second quarter, the Warriors increased their lead to 12 points after an
Izzy Vogel layup. Following the basket, the Raiders went on a 9-2 run to make it a five-point game, but after a couple of free throws by
Brie Droege, the Warriors entered halftime up by seven.
SU chipped away at the ESU lead to make it a three-point game at the 7:12 mark of the third quarter, but the Warriors responded with an 8-0 run thanks to baskets by
Brie Droege, Kringe, and two shots by Chmiel to make it a 48-37 game with 3:50 remaining. At the end of the quarter, ESU led 52-44 after a Kringe jumper. Following a Raider basket, the score margin would never increase past two possessions in the tightly contested final quarter. At the 2:28 mark, Shippensburg took its first lead since leading 13-12 in the first quarter. After a pair of free throws made it a four-point game, ESU threatened with a
Brie Droege three-pointer to make it a one-point game, but the clock expired following the basket, bringing the game to a close.
