EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – An East Stroudsburg University alumnus will be coaching in Super Bowl LIX on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2025, in New Orleans.
The question is: which one?
Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio '80 and Washington Commanders assistant special teams coach John Glenn '05 will face off in the NFC Championship Game at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Sunday, Jan. 26, at 3 p.m., with the winner earning a trip to the Super Bowl.
"It is really unbelievable to have two East Stroudsburg University alums coaching for the NFC Championship," said ESU football head coach Jimmy Terwilliger. "Both John and Vic are tremendous coaches at the top level of our sport and, more importantly, they are far better people. Coach Fangio and Coach Glenn are both TRUE WARRIORS, and it is amazing to share this brotherhood with them. It is a firm reminder that Blood Runs THICK. Best wishes to both—you have made all the WARRIORS proud!"
Fangio, in his first season with the Eagles, has revitalized the defense into one of the league's best. Entering the weekend, Philadelphia leads the NFL in total defense and passing defense, ranks second in scoring defense, fifth in red zone defense, and 10th in rushing defense.
A Dunmore native, Fangio has had a storied coaching career. He became the second ESU alumnus to serve as an NFL head coach during his tenure with the Denver Broncos (2019-21), joining Fred O'Connor '62, who was interim head coach for the San Francisco 49ers in 1978. Fangio, one of the top defensive minds in the game, has also served as a defensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins, Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers, Stanford University, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, and Carolina Panthers.
During his time at ESU, Fangio took coaching classes under All-Time PSAC wins leader Denny Douds and contributed to a program that captured four PSAC East titles over six years.
Glenn, in his first season with the Commanders, previously spent 12 seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, where he earned a Super Bowl ring as the linebackers coach in 2013. Glenn was a standout for ESU as a starter on the Warriors' 2004 and 2005 NCAA Division II Playoff teams, including the 2005 squad that captured the Northeast Region title and advanced to the NCAA semifinals.Terwilliger and Glenn were teammates on both teams.
The Scranton native played in 26 games over two seasons, recording 160 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, five interceptions, and three fumble recoveries. Glenn also lettered in basketball at ESU, playing in 25 games during the 2002-03 season.
One of these ESU alumni will advance to Super Bowl LIX, where they will face the winner of the AFC Championship Game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills.
Another former Warrior, Pat Flaherty '78, won championships as offensive line coach for the New York Giants in 2007 and 2011.
