EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. -- The East Stroudsburg women's basketball team defeated the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans, 63-52, Tuesday evening inside Koehler Fieldhouse.
The Warriors improved to 4-1 overall while St. Thomas Aquinas fell to 1-4 overall.
Notables
Avery White led the team with 17 points, grabbed five rebounds, and posted a steal and block each. Emma Thornton followed with 14 points, went a perfect 7-7 from the field, grabbed four rebounds and one steal. Brooke Droege rounded out the top scorers with 13 points, and led the team in both steals (6) and rebounds (7). Jess Devine and Lacie Kringe recorded five assists each.
How it happened
White opened the scoring for the Warriors with a layup. Three free throws and a layup from Thornton pushed their lead to five points, 7-2. The Spartans responded with a three pointer at 3:56 then White hit one herself at 2:43 to go back up by five, 10-5. The Spartans scored two consecutive baskets to pull within one, 10-9. The teams traded layups before Devine's three pointer at 0:21 closed out the first quarter.
The Warriors opened the second quarter with a three pointer from White followed by a jumper from Lacie Kringe, extending the lead to 20-11. The Spartans responded with three triples and added six points from the free throw line. For the Warriors, Brooke scored twice in the period, while Brie and Thornton each added a basket.
After halftime, Brie opened the scoring with a basket, and White followed with her third three pointer at 7:34. The Spartans answered with a triple of their own at 7:05, cutting the lead to 35-29. Brooke's layup at 4:18 pushed the Warriors back ahead by 10, 41-31. The teams traded baskets the rest of the way, and the Warriors entered the fourth quarter up 45-35.
In the fourth, St. Thomas Aquinas scored 17 points, and ESU added 18 points.
