ESU Baseball Falls to IUP, 2-1, in PSAC Tournament; NCAA Selection Set for Sunday Night

MILLERSVILLE – IUP, the No. 3 seed in the PSAC West, scratched out runs in the first and fifth innings and held on for a 2-1 win over East Stroudsburg University, the No. 2 seed in the PSAC East, in the PSAC Tournament's single-elimination opening round on Wednesday morning at Cooper Park at Millersville University.

ESU (35-14), making its fourth straight PSAC Tournament appearance, was the runner-up in both 2022 and 2024 but bows out in the first round in 2025.

The Warriors will await the NCAA Division II Tournament announcement on Sunday night at 10 p.m. They were listed No. 3 in the Atlantic Region in the most recent rankings on April 27. Six teams will earn spots in the regional, including automatic bids to the winners of the PSAC and Mountain East tournaments.  ESU has made seven NCAA Tournament appearances, six under head coach John Kochmansky, including each of the last three seasons.

Derrick Shields (6.2 IP, 0 runs, 5 hits), Cameron Copple (1.1 IP, 1 run, 1 hit) and Nick Rispoli (1.0 IP, 3 strikeouts) combined to hold ESU to six hits for IUP. Shields improved to 5-3 on the season.

Five Warriors pitchers limited IUP (25-25) to just five hits – junior Ryan Dewees (4.1 IP, 2 runs, 3 hits, 4 strikeouts, 1 walk), sophomore Jake Albert (1.2 IP, 3 strikeouts, 3 walks), sophomore Johansel Brito (2.0 IP, 1 hit, 1 walk), freshman Cole Dymek (0.2 IP, 1 hit, 2 strikeouts, 1 walk) and senior Caden Parker, who got the final out of the ninth.

IUP opened the game with a double by Au'sean Owens and a single by Ricardo Aponte, and Owens scored on a sacrifice fly that gave the Crimson Hawks a 1-0 lead. Dewees retired 12 of the next 13, with one batter reaching on an error, from the first through the fourth.

In the fifth, Cayden Bender had a leadoff single, and IUP loaded the bases after a pair of sacrifices and a pair of walks, one intentional. DH Mike Huber walked to plate Bender with the second run before Albert struck out first team All-PSAC West selection Elijah Dunn with the bases loaded.

ESU cut the deficit to 2-1 in the eighth inning when redshirt sophomore Chaise Albus and redshirt junior Parker Frey walked, and redshirt junior Walker Zampella had an RBI single before being thrown out at second to end the inning.

The Warriors had also threatened in the second, leaving the bases loaded after a single by Frey and two walks, and the seventh, when sophomore Troy Davis had a leadoff single and stole second before IUP got out of trouble.

Albus, Frey and Davis all had a hit and a walk to account for six of ESU's 10 baserunners.

Owens and Aponte both reached base twice for IUP.
