No. 3 ESU Field Hockey Shuts Out Assumption to Move to 2-0 on the Season

WORCESTER, MA – The No. 3 East Stroudsburg University field hockey team moved to 2-0 on the season after a thrilling shutout victory over the Assumption Greyhounds Sunday afternoon at Brian Kelly Stadium. The Warriors went up 1-0 in the first quarter and were able to maintain that lead for the rest of the game to secure the win.
 
Notables
Sydney Pope and Jet Vermeulen had a combined shutout with 11 total saves on the day.
Elaiana Rivera-Lagalla scored the game winning goal off a penalty stroke; this was her first goal of the season.  
 
How it Happened:
Six minutes into the first quarter, East Stroudsburg University was awarded a penalty stroke. A Greyhound player committed a foul within the circle that prevented a certain goal from being scored. The Warriors sent Rivera-Lagalla to the penalty spot to take the shot. She won the 1v1 battle against the Greyhounds' goalkeeper to put the Warriors up 1-0.
 
The Warriors' defense was the headline for the remainder of the game. ESU was able to shut down all offensive efforts put forth by the Greyhounds, including six shots on goal and seven penalty corners in the last quarter. Both Pope and Vermeulen had some outstanding saves as well, staving off 11 shots from the Greyhounds.
 
Up Next
The Warriors hit the road again for a matchup against Mansfield on Wednesday, September 10th at 4:00 PM. This will be the first conference game of the season for ESU.
