NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. — After leading Division II in total points and leading ESU to the NCAA Semifinals,
Sadie Kauffman was named the Attacker of the Year, the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association announced Tuesday afternoon.
Kauffman, who finished the season with 110 goals and 32 assists, is the second sophomore to be named the IWLCA's Attacker of the Year, joining last year's recipient, Peyton Howell from the University of Tampa, as the only two underclassmen to earn the award. She's now the second ESU player to win a positional athlete of the year award from the IWLCA, as
Abby Simonetti was named the top goalie in Division II in 2024. Her 142 points paced Division II, and she was only three goals short of leading in that category as well.
Kauffman, the most dominant offensive player in Division II, was unstoppable all season long. She opened the season with 28 goals and six assists in ESU's six non-conference games, including six-point outings against Seton Hill and Adelphi, and a nine-point game versus Bentley. Kauffman kicked her play up a notch against PSAC opponents, opening conference play with a five-goal, five-assist performance at Kutztown and recording another 10-point performance later in May against West Chester. When the stakes were high, that's when Kauffman played her best, most notably in the NCAA Quarterfinals. In her fourth game against the Golden Bears, she netted nine goals, scoring with a combination of fastbreaks off draw controls, beating double teams, and converting on free-position attempts.
For the second time in as many seasons, Kauffman broke the single-season program records for points and goals, besting her marks from her freshman season. Additionally, she shattered the team record for draw controls in a season, finishing the year with 173 — the fifth-most in Division II. Her 10.0 shots per game and 6.6 shots on goal per game both ranked third, while her 0.95 free-position goals per game ranked fifth in the country.
Kauffman earned plenty of accolades for her sophomore season, including the Division II All-Tournament Team, First Team All-America from both the IWLCA and USA Lacrosse Magazine, PSAC East Athlete of the Year, four national player of the week awards, and five PSAC East Athlete of the Week honors. She led the Warriors to their first undefeated regular season in program history, beginning the year with 18 wins in a row in their 20-2 campaign. With 43 career games under her belt, she's scored at least two goals in every game played and has 38 hat tricks in her career. Kauffman has tallied 213 goals and 58 assists for 271 points, only trailing Emily Mitarotonda for the records in both categories.
