EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. — The ESU men's soccer team got back on track Wednesday night, taking down Lackawanna in the Warriors' first game against the Falcons, 3-0.
NOTABLES
- It was a night of firsts for three players, as two scored their first goals for ESU, and a third recorded his first win in net. Sophomore midfielder Tommy Renkin and freshman defender Bradford Foster each found the back of the net, padding the Warriors' lead late in the contest.
- Sophomore forward Jeter Cardona opened the scoring for the Warriors, scoring his second goal of the year and jumping into a tie for the team lead with six points on the season.
- Gabin Meneyrol got the start for the Warriors in net, impressing in his first collegiate win. The freshman goalkeeper made two saves in the shutout victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a quiet first half, the Warriors wasted no time taking the lead coming out of the break. Cardona gathered the rebound from a blocked shot, putting the second chance in the bottom right corner of the net just under four minutes into the second half.
- The Warriors used more chaos to create their second goal, coming off of a corner kick. Junior defender Riley Turkal, who had a couple of good looks off set pieces throughout the game, had his shot blocked directly off the corner. Foster had the ball bounce right to his foot, burying the opportunity to double ESU's lead.
- With a little under 12 minutes remaining in the game, Renkin cleaned up the aftermath of a free kick to make it 3-0. After the ball was kicked into the box, he spun back towards the left post and sent a left-footed strike along the ground past the Falcons' diving goalkeeper.
GAME NOTES
- The Warriors controlled play throughout the night, leading in shots and corners in both halves. Overall, they led 19-3 in the former, and 9-3 in the latter.
