BLOOMSBURG, Pa. — Women's tennis showed out at the Bloomsburg Flighted Tournament, earning multiple top three finishes in both singles and doubles competition, including a singles bracket win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
ESU has two doubles competing in the Maroon Doubles Flight.
Lea Stefanovic and
Elessa Jacobs started off the day falling to one of the Kutztown entries but followed it with a win over Daemen's duo. In their placing match, Stefanovic and Jacobs made quick work of the Edinboro team, defeating them 6-2 to earn fifth place.
Ariel Kelsick and
Jenna Kastell earned a 6-4 victory over the same Edinboro group in the first round. In the second, Kelsick and Kastell recorded four points but were unable to down the eventual bracket champions. In the deciding match for third place, the Warrior duo handled the same Kutztown team that defeated their teammates in a 6-3 match.
The Gold Doubles Flight also saw two entries for ESU, the first being
Bega Gotor and
Claudia Ermina. The two won their first match, 6-1, but dropped to the runner-up Bloomsburg duo. Gotor and Ermina shut out the other Bloomsburg team for seventh place.
Audrey Conover and
Stella Kammandel took the victory over the same Bloomsburg players deafted by Gotor and Ermina. In the second round, the duo dropped the match but made up for it by taking third place in a 6-1 win over Kutztown.
In singles action, Stefanovic and Kelsick competed in the Maroon Singles Flight. Both dropped their first-round matches in two sets before going on to win in the second round. This led to them matching up against each other for the fifth-placing match, but the juniors elected not to compete.
The Gold Singles Flight saw Kastell and Jacobs win their first matches as well. In the second, Kastell claimed victory over Lily Sierka from Bloomsburg with a comeback, winning the superset, 10-6, after narrowly dropping the second set. Facing the other Bloomsburg entry, Lourdes Vallejo, Kastell took three games in the first set, but was unable to take the win. In the second set, the junior improved, but couldn't come out on top resulting in a second place finish in the bracket. Jacobs faced Vallejo in the second round, falling in the first set and despite winning two more games in the second, fell in the second set as well. She made it to the third place match, but the match went unplayed.
Kammandel won her first match in the Silver Singles Flight in two sets, moving on to face Bloomsburg's Ona Marcinkeciute who did not have a match in the first round. Kammandel took two games in each set, but it wasn't enough to move on to the next round. Instead, she faced Daniela Tomala from Edinboro for third place. The first set was won by Kammandel, 4-1, but the second was much closer. Regardless, the freshman stepped up to the pressure, pulling out a 5-4 win. For Conover, she won her first match, allowing just two games against her in both. She lost the first set of her second-round match against Tomala but rallied back in the second set to force a superset which Conover was able to emerge victorious from. The sophomore earned her way into the champion match where she was able to claim another win and be crowned the winner of the bracket.
Gotor was the lone ESU representative in the Red Singles Flight. She took down one of Kutztown's entries in the first round, doing so swiftly in two sets. In the second round, the senior shut out her opponent in the first set, and though the second set was much closer, Gotor came out on top once again. With a chance at winning the bracket, Gotor racked up three games in the first set, but couldn't pull out the victory. She was unable to rally in the second, finishing the bracket with a second-place finish.
In the White Singles Flight was Ermina for the Warriors. In her first match, she took the first set, 6-2, but couldn't hold on in the second. She pushed the superset, scoring seven points, but wasn't able to take the win. In Ermina's second set, she battled for a 7-6 victory in the first set and dominated the second to win the match. The final match of the tournament was controlled by Ermina as she claimed 4-2 and 4-1 wins in sets one and two respectively.
Throughout the whole tournament, ESU earned two third place finishes in the doubles brackets as well as two more in the singles brackets. On top of that, the Warriors scored two second place finishes in singles and a win from Conover.
