WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Freshman
Laura Beimfohr broke the school record in the pole vault in her first career outdoor meet and the men's sprint medley relay just missed setting a new record as East Stroudsburg University competed at the Monmouth Invitational on Saturday in New Jersey.
Beimfohr was one of five individual winners for the Warriors, opening her outdoor season with a record-setting performance the same way she did during the indoor season at the Lehigh Invitational. She cleared 10-9, breaking the previous mark of 10-6 1/4 set two years ago by Kristen Morby, and finished the indoor season with the record set at 11-6 1/2.
The Warriors men's sprinters showcased their depth in the sprint medley relay and 4x100m relay in lieu of a heavy slate of individual events in the second meet of the outdoor season.
In the sprint medley, a seldom-run event, junior
Ian Melhorn, seniors
Greg Pammer and
Negus Graham and sophomore
Mike Saparito combined for a time of 3:30.60, just six-hundredths of a second off the school record set in 2000. Melhorn (22.2) and Pammer (21.8) ran the 200, Graham (48.0) ran the 400 and Saparito (1:58.6) ran the 800 to account for the four laps around the track.
Ashfield, freshman
Keith Parker-Washington, Graham and Melhorn ran a time of 41.84 in the 4x100 relay a week after running an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 41.17 at Lynchburg. The Warriors won by nearly a second in a field that included five Division I schools.
Other winners for the Warriors were senior
Lynn Mayer in the high jump (5-5 3/4), freshman
Brittany Callahan in the 3000m steeplechase (12:01.15), freshman
James Homola in the pole vault (15-6) and junior
Josh Hontz in the javelin (189-4).
Mayer, a five-time All-American, has won the high jump in 19 of her last 22 meets since the start of last outdoor season. More impressively, in the only three meets she didn't win, she was runner-up at the Penn Relays, tied for third at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and was the runner-up two weeks ago at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Callahan ran the seventh-fastest time in school history in the steeplechase in her first time in the event, just missing the 12-minute mark. Sophomore
Corinne Fitzgerald, the school record holder in the steeplechase, also had a top-10 effort in the 1500m, running a time of 4:51.11 to finish seventh in the meet and ranking 10th on ESU's all-time list. Sophomore
Bridget McCarron (4:54.68) and freshman
Kim Lowry (4:58.51) also broke the five-minute mark.
Homola, a high school teammate of Beimfohr at Oxford, won the men's pole vault with a mark of 15-5 3/4 which is 4 1/4 inches off ESU's freshman record. Hontz won the javelin at 189-4 after posting a mark of 193-0 at Lynchburg last week.
Seniors
Jackie Berthelsen and
Danielle Laws had strong performances in the throwing events. Berthelsen's mark of 39-7 1/4 was a personal best, ranks eighth in school history and placed her fourth in the meet. Laws was fourth in the hammer (152-1) and fifth in the discus (115-7).
On the men's side, Parker-Washington was third in the 200 in 22.25 and Pammer and Ashfield were eighth and ninth with times of 22.74 seconds. Parker-Washington, Pammer and freshmen
Kyle Tuohy and
Christopher Walker were second in the 4x400 relay in 3:23.36.
Saparito, the PSAC indoor champion in the 800, was fourth in 1:57.42 and sophomore
Amr Aldeen was ninth in the 5000 in 15:41.27.
The Warriors will compete at Lafayette next Saturday, the third of nine weekends that will culminate with the PSAC Outdoor Championships on May 12-14 at Slippery Rock.
