ESU Athletes Win Nine Individual Events, Two Relays at Lehigh Invitational

BETHLEHEM – East Stroudsburg University won six men's events, including an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark from junior Brandon Hillman in the triple jump, and the women won three individual events and two relays to highlight Saturday's Lehigh Invitational.

The Warriors sent four individuals and four relay teams to the Penn Relays last week as well, getting an NCAA automatic mark and school record from sophomore Rose Mascoli in the women's championship 10,000m and a runner-up finish in the men's collegiate javelin from junior Josh Hontz, a provisional qualifier.

Freshman Elizabeth Madden broke ESU's freshman record in the women's hammer throw at Lehigh with a mark of 142-4. Senior Danielle Laws was fourth with a mark of 161-3, just two inches off her personal best.

The winners for the Warriors' men were junior Greg Laraia in the 5000m (15:33.45), sophomore Cory Young in the 110m hurdles (14.91, PR), freshman Christopher Walker in the 400m hurdles (55.51, PR), sophomore Mike Pereira in the 3000m steeplechase (9:39.34, PR), Hillman in the triple jump and sophomore Russell Hedrick in the javelin (183-4).

The women were led by sophomore Bridget McCarron in the 1500m (4:43.44, PR), senior Lynn Mayer in the high jump (5-7) and junior Jenn Alpers in the triple jump (34-4, PR). The women's 4x100 relay of sophomore Lauren Hannan, freshmen Morgan McCarthy and Brittany Jones and junior Alyssa Rupp and 4x400 squad of sophomores Tara Getz and Lauren Ventrella and freshmen Christy Cardillo and Meghan Ragard were also victorious.

McCarron's time in the 1500m is the fourth-fastest in school history and was followed by season-best performances from freshmen Kim Wernerspach (4:53.78) and Kim Lowry (4:56.70).

Senior Brittany Knowles was second in the 100m hurdles and improved her personal best time to 15.40, sixth on ESU's top 10 list. In the 400m hurdles, junior Adrienne Dieter (1:08.17), freshman Janice Erbe (1:08.41) and sophomore Julie Granteed (1:09.43) all ran season-best times.

The Warriors also received runner-up finishes from freshman Brittany Callahan in the 3000m steeplechase (12:00.12) and sophomore Cassandra Lacorazza in the 5000m (19:38.44).

In the sprints, freshman Brittany Jones was fifth in the 100 (13.09) and seventh in the 200 (27.06) and freshman Morgan McCarthy was seventh in the 100 (13.19) and fourth in the 200 (26.78) as the Warriors' top two finishers. Cardillo was third (1:01.08) and Getz was fifth (1:01.57) in the 400.

The women's field event performances were led by Mayer, a five-time All-American in the high jump who was named ESU's Female Senior Athlete of the Year at Sunday's Athletic Awards Banquet. She won with a mark of 5-7 after clearing 5-6 to tie for ninth at the Penn Relays on Thursday.

Freshman Laura Beimfohr cleared 11-1 3/4, a season-best outdoors, to place second in the pole vault a week after setting ESU's outdoor season record (11-3 3/4) indoors at Koehler Fieldhouse during the All-American Meet. Senior Steph Weber had a season-best at 10-2 and sophomore Kimberly Lawson had a career-best of 9-8.

Laws was fourth in both the hammer and discus (124-1), senior Jackie Berthelsen was fifth in the shot put (38-1 1/4) and sophomore Arielle Williamson had a season-best of 111-7 to place fourth in the javelin.

The Warriors' men turned in a number of outstanding performances while Hontz and the 4x800m relay were competing at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia.

Young (14.91), sophomore Kyle Soden (15.13) and Hillman (15.43) all had personal bests in the 110m hurdles along with Walker's PR in the 400m hurdles. Walker, Hillman, sophomore Andrew Sloves and Young were third in the 4x400m relay in 3:30.76.

In the distance events, Laraia was first in the 1500, Pereira was first and freshman James Romano was second in the steeplechase and freshman Chris Schneider was second in the 1500.

Two Warriors finished second in field events, freshman James Homola in the pole vault (14-9) and freshman Cory Kresge in the long jump (21-7 1/2), along with first-place finishes from Hillman in the triple jump and Hedrick in the javelin.

ESU will compete at the Kutztown Invitational next weekend in its final tune-up for the PSAC Championships, which will be held May 12-14 at Slippery Rock.
