EDINBORO – Junior Elizabeth Madden won the women's weight throw, breaking her school record with a mark of 52-1 3/4, to lead East Stroudsburg University on the first day of the PSAC Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday at Edinboro.

Madden, the runner-up last year, was the pace setter on a strong first day for the Warriors. ESU had nine individual scoring performances – five from the women and four from the men – and had most of their top athletes advance to the finals of the sprints.

Sophomore Danielle Smith qualified first for the finals in both the 60m dash (7.72) and 200m (24.99), clocking two NCAA Division II provisional qualifying times and breaking her own school record in the 60 by one-hundredth of a second. Smith, the PSAC 100m and 200m champion outdoors last year, was five-hundredths off Cheryl Griffin's 13-year old record in the 200.

Scorers for the women on Saturday were Madden in the weight throw, junior Theresa Horn (4th) and senior Aniyah Williams (8th) in the pentathlon, junior Laura Beimfohr in the pole vault (t-5th – 11-2 1/2) and senior Corinne Fitzgerald in the 5000m (17:56.64).

The 4x800m relay of freshman Heather Spadola, sophomore Imani Rosario, sophomore Gabrielle Gombos and junior Kim Wernerspach was fifth in 9:48.78. The DMR of junior Kim Lowry, junior Meghan Ragard, sophomore Maria Manno and senior Rose Mascoli was eighth in 12:52.29.

The Warriors' women stand fifth of 14 schools through the first day of competition with 28 points.

The men are third of 12 schools with 37 points – getting two scorers in both the 5000m and weight throw, a second-place run from the 4x800m relay and third-place finish from the DMR.

Sophomore Travis Toth was second in the weight (59-1 1/2) and sophomore Mike Smith was fifth (56-2), both NCAA provisional qualifying marks. Toth's mark ranks second in school history.

In the 5K, seniors Frank Fezza and James Romano were third and fourth, respectively. Fezza ran 15:09.34 and Romano ran 15:12.73 for his second career scoring performance.

The 4x800m relay ran ESU's second-fastest time in school history (7:49.49) with freshman  Dmitri Mobley (2:01.2), sophomore Damien Boham (1:55.3), junior Chris Schneider (1:57.8) and senior Mike Saparito (1:53.8).

Saparito led off for the third-place DMR in 3:06.0, followed by freshman William Berry (49.7), senior Amr Aldeen (1:57.8) and Fezza (4:15.5).

Boham qualified second for the final of the 400m, improving his NCAA provisional time to 49.01, third-fastest in school history.

Junior Keith Parker-Washington is the third-fastest qualifier for Sunday's 200m final, clocking 22.25.

The Warriors have three finalists in the 60m dash in sophomore Brandon Mercer (5th – 7.03), freshman Mark Burgess (6th – 7.05) and freshman Joey Bruno (8th – 7.11), who was 14th on the entry list with a season-best of 7.18.

Senior Kyle Soden was seventh in the 60m hurdles prelims in 8.59, with Mobley just missing the final in 8.64.

In the heptathlon, senior Andrew Sloves is eighth and freshman Eric Conard is 12th through the first four of seven events.

Junior Rachel Pierantozzi joins Smith in the finals of the 60m and 200m, qualifying fourth in the 60 in 7.83 and eighth in the 200 in 26.04.

Senior Lauren Ventrella is seeded third in the 60m hurdles final in 9.02 as she goes after her seventh career scoring performance. She was the PSAC indoor champion as a freshman and was fourth indoors and third outdoors last year.

Sunday's action gets underway with the conclusion of the men's multi at 10:30 a.m., followed by field event finals in the men's shot put, men's high jump and women's triple jump at 11 a.m. The first track action is the mile at 11:30 a.m.

The meet is slated to conclude at about 3 p.m.
