ESU PREVIEW

PHILADELPHIA – Seniors Frank Fezza and Corinne Fitzgerald set school records to headline a strong performance from six East Stroudsburg University athletes on the first day of the 119th Annual Penn Relays on Thursday at historic Franklin Field.

Fezza, running the 10,000m in competition for the first time in his career, broke a 29-year old school by 10 seconds, running 30:16.22 to break the mark of 30:26.54 set by Steve Montick in 1984. A cross country All-American last fall, Fezza also holds the school record in the indoor 3000m and is in ESU's top 10 at every distance from 800 to 10,000 meters outdoors.

Fitzgerald lowered her own school record in the 3000m steeplechase, clocking 10:37.95 to knock almost four seconds off her record of 10:41.72, which she set last year at Penn.

She entered the Penn Relays with the PSAC's #2 time in the steeplechase and improved her NCAA Division II provisional time to the top 10 in the country. She was fourth of 21 runners after finishing eight of 23 last year.

The Warriors had four NCAA provisional times from Fezza, Fitzgerald, senior James Romano (3000m steeplechase) and sophomore Christina O'Connor (high jump).

Romano ran 9:15.30, a 13-second PR and ESU's fastest time in the 3000m steeplechase since Jim Lauck in 1987. His time ranks fifth on ESU's all-time list.

O'Connor cleared 5-6 in the high jump, an outdoor season best and currently the #2 mark in the PSAC. O'Connor was an All-American during the indoor season.

Junior Chris Schneider ran a four-second PR in the 5000m in 14:53.01, entering the meet with the PSAC's #4 time this season.

Senior Rose Mascoli ran a season-best of 37:20.06 in the 10,000m, currently the PSAC's #7 time this spring.

ESU's women's 4x400m relay team ran a season best of 3:59.10 to finish sixth of nine schools in its heat. Sophomore Danielle Smith had the Warriors' fastest leg in 57.6 after anchoring last year in 58.4.

Other Warriors slated to compete individually are seniors Matt Tholis and Josh Hontz in the javelin and sophomore Travis Toth in the hammer, all on Saturday.

Friday's action includes the men's and women's 4x200m relays and the men's 4x400m Wetzler/Pennsylvania relay, where the Warriors will compete against nine other Pennsylvania schools.

Saturday features the men's throws plus the men's 4x800m relay.
