HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Redshirt senior
Mike Raccioppi claimed the 174-pound title and several other wrestlers had strong performances for the East Stroudsburg University men's wrestling team at the 2019 Bob Quade Cyclone Open on Sunday.
Raccioppi finished the open with a perfect 4-0 mark as he recorded three pins on the day for the Warriors. After receiving a bye to start the open, Raccioppi pinned Avery Frank in 2:05. He followed with a victory via 12-3 major decision and another pin to advance to the finals. Raccioppi's pin of Derick Yingling in 1:06 secured the title at 174 pounds.
Junior
Marquan Payne recorded a third-place finish for ESU at 157 pounds, going 5-1. Payne dropped his opening match before stringing together five straight wins to capture the third-place bout via a 14-11 decision against Kyle Shaffer. He tallied a pair of pins and one major decision on the day through six bouts.
Freshman
Nick Weikel also went 5-1 on the day for the Warriors as he delivered a third-place finish at 165 pounds. Weikel recorded a pin of Rudy Rodriguez before dropping a 7-1 decision to fall into the consolation bracket. He would go on to notch four consecutive victories to secure a third-place finish. Four of his five victories would come via a pin on the day.
Freshman
Clayton Green advanced to the consolation semifinals at 197 pounds after opening the day 3-0 for the Warriors. He recorded a 7-3 decision in his opening match before delivering a 6-3 decision and 2-0 decision to advance to the semifinals. Green would fall 10-7 against Robert Spezza in the semifinals and against in the consolation semifinals.
Freshman
Nick Nittoli advanced to the consolation quarterfinals at 285 pounds after finishing the day 4-2. He dropped his second bout of the day via a 7-1 decision before rallying for three consecutive victories. Three of his wins came via pin before falling 5-1 against Keegan Connelly in the quarterfinals.
Junior
Sczar Charles and freshman
Aaron Acosta both advanced to the consolation quarterfinals of their respective weight classes on the day. Charles went 3-2 for ESU at 184 pounds and won three consecutive bouts to advance to the quarterfinals. Acosta also went 3-2 for the Warriors and would take the same path as Charles, winning three consecutive bouts to advance to the quarterfinals at 133 pounds. Freshman
Bryce Parenti also won three matches on the afternoon for the Warriors at 133 pounds.
ESU opens the 2020 portion of its season on Jan. 5 at the Williams Open in Williamstown, Massachusetts. The Warriors return to dual action against Muhlenberg on January 14 beginning at 7:30 p.m. inside Koehler Fieldhouse.
