Michal Weiss Honored as PSAC Champion Scholar for Men’s Basketball

3/9/2019 1:00:00 PM

INDIANA, Pa. – East Stroudsburg University junior forward Michal Weiss was announced Saturday as the PSAC Champion Scholar for men's basketball.

The award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest grade-point average at the PSAC championship site. Weiss holds a 3.875 GPA through 72 credits while majoring in business management.

The Prague, Czech Republic, native has responded to an increase in playing time this season, averaging 6.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 16.1 minutes per game across 26 appearances (two starts). He has surpassed 10 points on seven occasions, earning his first collegiate double-double with a 17-point, 10-rebound performance against Millersville on Jan. 30.

Weiss is shooting 69.6 percent this season, hitting 80 of 115 field goal attempts. The ESU single-season record (minimum 100 attempts) is currently 66.0 percent, a figure which was established by Steve Harris during the Warriors' run to an Atlantic Region championship last winter.

This is the second academic honor for Weiss this season, as he was previously named to the Lehigh Valley Small College Basketball Scholar-Athlete team for a third-consecutive year back in January.

Weiss becomes ESU's 15th Champion Scholar since the program was instituted in 2011-12, and he is the first honoree for the men's basketball program. He is ESU's third recipient during the 2018-19 academic year, joining twins Carly Abbott and Nicole Abbott, who were dual recipients for women's soccer in the fall.
