MANSFIELD, Pa. – Junior
Me'Saj Closs broke her own school record in the hammer throw and senior
Victoria Matthews sits in second-place through four of seven events in the heptathlon after the completion of the opening day at the 2019 PSAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Closs delivered a personal-best mark of 167-8 for the Warriors in the hammer, besting her previous school record of 166-9. She placed fourth and improved upon her eighth-place finish from a year ago in the event.
Freshman
Taylor Barkman set the ESU freshman record in the hammer with a mark of 143-9 and placed 10th, while junior
Barbara Grossov delivered the ninth-longest throw in program history and placed eighth with a mark of 148-7. Junior
Sam Giangrasso finished ninth (144-11) and junior
Alexis Schuldes placed 11th (141-6).
In the 10,000-meter run, junior
Jenna Vledder placed sixth for the Warriors with a time of 38:54.51. She shaved almost four and a half minutes off her time that she ran last year at the 2018 PSAC Outdoor Championships.
Matthews tallied 2,548 points through the opening four events of the heptathlon for ESU. She set a personal-best in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.99 while also adding a personal-best mark of 29-5 1/4 in the shot put. Matthews finished second in the high jump with a mark of 5-2 1/2 and fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.79.
The remaining three events (800-meter, long jump, and javelin) will be completed on Friday morning. Matthews' personal-best point total in the heptathlon is 3,987, which she recorded at the Mondschein Multi at Kutztown in April.
The Warriors will have 20 individual athletes competing across 13 events on Friday. ESU will also field three relay teams in the 4x100, 4x400, and 4x800. The finals of the 2019 PSAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships are scheduled to take place on Saturday at Mansfield University.
