DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – East Stroudsburg University assistant men's basketball coach and ESU alumnus Muhamadou Kaba '15 has been named the head men's basketball coach at Delaware Valley University, the school announced on Monday morning.
As a coach or player, Kaba has been a part of three of ESU's four PSAC Championships (2012, 2014, 2018) and five of the program's seven NCAA Tournament appearances (2012, 2013, 2014, 2018, 2019).
"I am so grateful for my time at ESU with Coach Jeff Wilson, our staff and the players who have helped me prepare me for this moment and I cannot wait to get to work!," said Kaba in Delaware Valley's release.
Kaba joined the ESU coaching staff in 2016-17 as a graduate assistant, before being promoted to assistant coach prior to the season beginning. Over the past four seasons, Kaba has helped the Warriors to an 86-34 record. In 2018, he helped guide ESU to its fourth-ever PSAC Championship and its only NCAA Atlantic Region Championship in program history.
Since he joined the Warriors staff in 2016-17, Kaba has helped six All-PSAC East student-athletes earn seven honors including Kitt Najee Walls (PSAC East 2nd Team, 2019-20), Josh Williams (PSAC East 1st Team, 2018-19), Jakwan Jones (PSAC East 2nd Team, 2018-19, 2017-18) Ryan Smith (PSAC East 2nd Team, 2018-19), Steve Harris (PSAC East First Team, 2017-18), and Rasheed Moore (PSAC East 1st Team, 2016-17). Additionally, Jones earned PSAC East Defensive Athlete of the Year (2018-19) and Smith earned PSAC East Freshman of the Year (2018-19) under Kaba's watch.
Kaba has been honored nationally on multiple occasions throughout his coaching tenure in the Poconos. In 2020, he was named as one of the top Division II men's basketball assistant coaches in the country by the Minority Coaches Association (MCA) and was recognized as one the "50 impactful Division II Assistants" by Silver Waves Media. In Spring 2018, he was one of just six Division II coaches to be recognized on the National Association of Basketball Coaches "30-Under-30" list.
As a student-athlete at ESU, Kaba played in 113 games as a guard, scoring 287 points and grabbing 227 rebounds. He was a four-year letter winner from 2011-15 and was a member of two PSAC Championship teams. He also played on three straight NCAA Tournament teams. His 2013-14 squad finished with a 30-2 record, marking a program high for victories.
Kaba earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics in 2015 and added a master's degree in exercise science from ESU in 2018. He was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee during his time as an undergrad.
