van Gils’ Last-Second Goal Propels No. 3 Field Hockey Past No. 5 Millersville, 1-0

EAST STROUDSBURG – Sophomore midfielder Jady van Gils scored with one second left on the clock to lift the third-ranked East Stroudsburg University field hockey team past No. 5 Millersville, 1-0, in a thrilling PSAC contest on Wednesday afternoon at Whitenight Field.

The Warriors improve to 10-1 overall, 3-1 in the PSAC and take down the Marauders for the sixth straight time, who drop to 10-2 on the season and suffer their first conference loss (3-1).

In the PSAC standing, ESU sits in a tie for second after No. 2 Shippensburg knocked off No. 1 West Chester to move to 3-1 in conference play.

For the second straight week, the Warriors remained at No. 3 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division II National Coaches Poll.

Notables
  • van Gils found the back of the net for the second time this season and recorded her third career game-winning goal
  • Senior Olivia Breen notched her fourth assist of the year on the goal from van Gils
  • Freshman Carmen van Kuringe kept the Marauders off the scoreboard with a defensive save at the 4:29 mark
  • Reigning PSAC Defensive Athlete of the Week Amy Supey was lights out as the junior goalkeeper finished with four saves for her third shutout of the season. Supey continues to lead the PSAC and NCAA DII with a 0.22 goals-against average and 0.920 save percentage.
  • ESU had the advantage over Millersville in shots (17-7), shots on goal (6-5) and penalty corners (9-7)
  • In her 38th season, head coach Sandy Miller collected her 469th career victory today, now needing 18 more to move into third all-time in Division II

59:59 | After an initial shot by Olivia Breen was blocked, the senior dished the ball to her right for a wide open van Gils, who crushed a shot into the bottom right corner of the cage as the last few seconds ticked off the clock to propel ESU to a 1-0 victory
