Volleyball Drops Five-Setter to Shippensburg

EAST STROUDSBURG – The East Stroudsburg University volleyball team dropped it third consecutive five-set match as Shippensburg took down the Warriors, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at Koehler Fieldhouse. The set scores were 25-20, 23-25, 17-25, 25-21, 12-15.

ESU falls to 12-11 overall and 6-4 in the PSAC East, while the Raiders complete the season sweep of the Warriors to move to 14-11 on the season and 6-4 in the conference.

With two weeks remaining in the regular season, the Warriors are tied with Shippensburg and West Chester for the two seed in the PSAC East.  

Notables vs. Shippensburg
  • Freshman Anna Coulter led the Warriors with a career-high 18 kills on a .412 hitting percentage while adding four blocks and a pair of digs
     
  • Junior Claire Choloux finished with 13 kills, nine digs as well as two aces, assists and blocks a piece
     
  • Redshirt junior Kaylee LoPresto notched her fifth double-double in the last six matches as she had 13 kills and 12 digs as well as three aces
     
  • In three sets, Sydney Stone tallied eight kills, 11 digs and two aces
     
  • Makaela McComas dished out a career-high 32 assists to go along with five digs, three kills and a pair of aces
     
  • Sophomore Taylor Haan did a little bit of everything for the Warriors with three kills, 20 assists, four digs, one ace and a block
     
  • Makayla Baca record her 21st match this season with double digit digs as the junior finished with 13 in three sets
     
  • Shippensburg out hit the Warriors by a slim margin of .286 (74 kills, 24 errors) to .238 (58 kills, 20 errors)
     
  • ESU posted their fifth match this season with 11 aces while the Raiders finished with three
     
  • The Warriors also held the advantage in blocks over Shippensburg, 8-6
How it Happened vs. Shippensburg
  • It was all ESU to begin the match as the Warriors raced out to a 12-3 lead with the help of four kills, three aces and five attack errors by the Raiders. However, Shippensburg slowly clawed their way back as the Raiders scored 10 of the next 15 points to cut their deficit to 17-13. A timeout helped ESU settle back in as the Warriors edged the Raiders 8-6 over the remainder of the frame to capture the 25-20 set one win for a 1-0 lead in the match.
     
  • It was back and forth to open the second set, with the score tied on multiple occasions (4-4, 5-5, 6-6, 9-9, 10-10), before a 7-1 run by ESU put the Warriors ahead 17-13. ESU stretched their lead to as many as five, until Shippensburg found themselves trailing by two points with the score at 20-18. After a timeout by ESU, it was all Shippensburg as the Raiders proceeded to outscore the Warriors, 11-6, down the stretch to secure the 25-23 set two victory which evened the match at 1-1.
     
  • Shippensburg carried their momentum over into the third set, jumping out in front 6-1, before pushing their lead to eight points at 11-3. The Raiders maintained their edge over the next several points, up 17-10 before a timeout by ESU. Out of the break, Shippensburg closed out the set, 25-17, for a 2-1 advantage.
     
  • The Raiders raced out to an early 6-2 lead in the fourth set, but the Warriors battled back to even the score at 12-12. Then with the frame tied at 16-16, ESU rattled off a 7-1 run to take a 23-17 lead, before ultimately closing out Shippensburg, 25-21, which forced a deciding fifth set.
     
  • The teams traded blows to begin the final frame, as the score was tied at 5-5 and 6-6, until the Warriors went up 8-6. Following a Shippensburg timeout, the Raiders evened it up at 8-8, but ESU quickly answered to pull back ahead, 10-8. However, Shippensburg closed out the match strong, outscoring the Warriors 7-3, which included the final three points to secure a 15-12 set five victory.
