EAST STROUDSBURG – In a battle of two of the top three teams in the PSAC East standings, it was Bloomsburg that earned a 6-2 win over the East Stroudsburg University men's soccer team on Wednesday night inside Eiler-Martin Stadium.
Despite the loss the Warriors (5-7, 4-3 PSAC East) remain in third-place with 12 points in the PSAC East, one point ahead of Lock Haven (3-2-2). The Huskies (9-2-1, 5-1-1 PSAC East) now lead the PSAC East Division with 16 points, with West Chester (4-1-1) idle on Wednesday.
With the Huskies leading 2-0 at halftime, the Warriors cut the deficit to just a single goal after a Nathan Bradway header, but Bloomsburg erupted for four consecutive goals to take control. ESU was able to respond with its second goal of the contest with Pieter Neerhof heading in a corner kick from Trevor Paone. Stelios Melekos tallied an assist on the Warriors' first goal.
Notables
- Stephen Hollis registered two goals and an assist for Bloomsburg, while Patrick Walsh, Olly Whitham, Anthony Schlee and Shay Gillen all found the back of the net. Along with Hollis, Whitham and Liam Harmon also recorded an assist.
- Bloomsburg led 17-15 on shots and 11-7 on shots on goal.
- Both teams tallied five saves.
- Bloomsburg did not register a corner kick, as ESU earned all five of the game.
- Bradway and Hubert Herrera each tallied a pair of shots on goal for ESU.
How it Happened
- 23' | Off a throw in, Hollis flung the header into the box. With players on both squads attempting to get a head on it, the ball would fly just above the heads of both teams and bounce into the goal.
- 25' | Not long after on a free kick, Whitham sent in an impressive free kick that found Walsh's head in between a couple of Warrior defenders. The shot ricocheted off Walsh's head and then bounced off the ground and into the nearside left corner.
- 51' | On the far side, Melekos sent a cross to Bradway in the center. Bradway was able to fight his way to get the first head on the ball and redirect to the nearside lower corner to cut the deficit to one. Â
- 62' | BU's streak of goals started 11 minutes later, when Hollis sent a free kick that was perfectly placed on Schlee's head with no Warrior defender in able to prevent the header into the net.
- 66' | A few minutes later, Harmon found Gillen on a cross. Gillen was able to immediately send a shot that deflected off of Raymond Fortebuono's diving glove and into the net.
- 74' | Hollis sent a long shot the found the upper left corner that found the net for Bloomsburg's fifth goal.
- 75' |The Huskies' final goal came just over a minute later as Whitam recorded a goal of his own, sending a similar long shot that defected off the nearside post and into the net. Â
- 77' | ESU was able to halt the scoring run with its second goal of the evening. Off a Trevor Paone corner kick, Paone was able to find Neerhof's head. Neerhof sent the shot in traffic into the net for his third goal of the season.
