Warriors Prepped to Begin 2022-23 Winter Seasons

EAST STROUDSBURG – East Stroudsburg University athletics has announced upcoming winter schedules for men’s and women’s basketball as well as men’s and women’s wrestling. Schedules for men’s and women’s track & field will be announced at a later date.

Schedule highlights are listed below, and spring schedules will be announced as they become available.

Men’s Basketball

The men’s basketball team gets its season underway at the Bowie State Tipoff Classic with games against Fayetteville State (Nov. 11) and the Bulldogs (Nov. 12), before returning to Koehler Fieldhouse for five straight games against D’Youville (Nov. 20), Bridgeport (Nov. 27), Clarion (Dec. 2), Pitt-Johnstown (Dec. 3) and Molloy (Dec. 7). 

The Warriors are then on the road at Georgian Court (Dec. 9), Seton Hill (Dec. 19) and California (Pa.) (Dec.19), until closing out the year at home against Slippery Rock (Dec. 30). 

The PSAC East preseason favorites open 2023 at Shippensburg on Jan. 4 and are back in the Poconos to square off against Mansfield (Jan. 7) and Bloomsburg (Jan. 11). The Warriors will make stops at Millersville (Jan. 14) and Shepherd (Jan. 18), before alternating home and away games with West Chester (Jan. 21), at Kutztown (Jan. 23), vs. Lock Haven (Jan. 25) and at IUP (Jan. 28). 

ESU begins the second half of their PSAC East schedule with three of four games on the road, beginning at Mansfield (Feb. 1), followed by a home contest against Shippensburg (Feb. 4), and then stops at Bloomsburg (Feb. 6) and West Chester (Feb. 8).

The Warriors are back at Koehler Fieldhouse for their final three games versus Millersville (Feb. 11), Kutztown (Feb. 15) and Shepherd (Feb. 18), before concluding the regular season at Lock Haven on Feb. 22. 

The PSAC Tournament is slated to run from Feb. 27 through March 5 with the top-six seeds in each division advancing, while the top remaining seed in the East will host the semifinals and championship game.

Women's Basketball

The women’s basketball team tips off with a handful of non-conference games starting at the Millersville Conference Challenge against Virginia Union (Nov. 12) and Shaw (Nov. 13). The Warriors return to Koehler Fieldhouse on Nov. 27 for their home-opener against Georgian Court, before welcoming a pair of PSAC West foes in Clarion (Dec. 2) and Pitt-Johnstown (Dec. 3). 

The Warriors return to the road for three straight games with trips to Holy Family (Dec. 10), Seton Hill (Dec. 18) and California (Dec. 19), before closing out 2022 at home versus Slippery Rock (Dec. 30).

ESU begins the new year at Shippensburg on Jan. 4 and is back home to continue PSAC East play against Mansfield (Jan. 7) and Bloomsburg (Jan. 11). The Warriors will then play five of their next seven games on the road with stops at Millersville (Jan. 14) and Shepherd (Jan. 18), until alternating home and away contests with West Chester (Jan. 21), at Kutztown (Jan. 23) and vs. Lock Haven (Jan. 25). ESU battles IUP on Jan. 28 and begins their second time around the Eastern Division at Mansfield on Feb. 1.

The Warriors welcome Shippensburg to the Poconos on Feb. 4 while making their way to Bloomsburg (Feb. 6) and West Chester (Feb. 8) within a five-day stretch. ESU plays their final three home against Millersville (Feb. 11), Kutztown (Feb. 15) and Shepherd (Feb. 18), before wrapping up the regular season at Lock Haven on Feb. 22. 

The top-six teams in the Eastern Division will advance to the PSAC Championships (Feb. 27, March 1, March 4 & 5), with the top seed in the West hosting the semifinal and title games.

Men’s Wrestling

The men’s wrestling team has a busy start to their 2022-23 schedule with four events in the first week, beginning with duals at Elmira (Nov. 2) and Springfield Technical Community College (Nov. 3). The Warriors host the 55th Annual ESU Open on Nov. 6, and head to Scranton on Nov. 9. The Warriors open up conference action inside Koehler Fieldhouse on Nov. 16 against Pitt-Johnstown, before traveling to the Albion Invitational (Nov. 20) and Bob Quade Cyclone Open (Dec. 4). 

ESU has three more events on the road in the month of December with a dual against Millersville (Dec.7), followed by the Nassau Open (Dec.11) and the University of Puerto Rico Open (Dec. 29).

The Warriors open up the new year with a pair of matches at Bloomsburg against King’s and the Huskies on Jan. 10 before making their way to the Will Abele Invitational on Jan. 14. 

ESU closes out their regular season with four of five matches at home, starting with Mercyhurst on Jan. 27, followed by a quick turnaround versus Gannon the next morning. The Warriors begin the month of February at Shippensburg (Feb. 1) before welcoming Seton Hill (Feb. 7) and Kutztown (Feb. 14) to the Poconos. 

The Warriors will host the NCAA Super Region I Championships on February 25 and the NCAA Championships are scheduled for March 10 & 11.

Junior Matthew Richardson and sophomore Ajay Hiller will serve as the Warriors’ captains in 2022-23, as announced by fourth-year head coach Anibal Nieves.

Women’s Wrestling

The nationally ranked Warriors open the season at Elmira on Nov. 2 and will then head to Western New England the following day. ESU is back at Koehler Fieldhouse on Nov. 6 for the 3rd annual ESU Women's Open. 

ESU then travels to a dual match at Lock Haven on Nov. 10, before trips to the Albion Invitational (Nov. 20), Northeast Regional Duals (Dec. 4 at Gannon), the Nassau Open (Dec. 11) and the Puerto Rico Open (Dec. 29)

The Warriors are back home to kickoff the new year with the Warrior Duals Round Robin Invitational on Jan. 8. ESU follows with a stop at the Will Abele Open (Jan. 15) and closes out their regular season schedule with home events against Sacred Heart (Jan. 21) as well as the Pennsylvania Women Collegiate State Championships (Jan. 29). 

Postseason action begins with the NCWWC Region I Championships at Gannon on Feb. 19, followed by the NCWWC National Championships on March 4 & 5 in Cedar Rapids Iowa.

The 2022-23 Warriors will be captained by juniors Avia Bibeau and Mia Macaluso as well sophomore Emily Klein, as announced by interim head coach Anibal Nieves.

Swimming

ESU got their 2022-23 season underway in the middle of last month, swimming against Millersville and Cedar Crest as well as at the two-day California (Pa.) Tri-Meet.

The Warriors make their way to Lock Haven on Nov. 12, before finishing off the 2022 portion of their second at Kean’s Cougar Invite (Nov. 18 & 19).

ESU returns to the pool in 2023 on Jan. 14 at Kutztown before welcoming Kean (Jan. 21) and Bloomsburg (Jan. 28) to Koehler Fieldhouse. ESU will then close out the regular season with a tri-meet versus Felician and the Golden Bears on Feb. 4.

The four-day PSAC Championships will run from Feb. 15-18 at the Graham Aquatic Center in York, Pennsylvania.
