ERIE, Pa. — A first-half cold stretch was too much to overcome against top-seeded Gannon, as the ESU men's basketball team fell to the Golden Knights 104-73 in the PSAC Quarterfinals Wednesday night.
NOTABLES
- Ethan Millirons led the team in scoring with 12 points. He made three attempts from beyond the arc and a layup as well.
- Keni Williams was ESU's other player in double-figures, scoring 10. Williams had two makes from distance and had three assists in 18 minutes.
- Jalen Pichardo was a point shy of a double-double, finishing with nine points and 11 rebounds. Eight of his came on the defensive glass, as he also shot 4-5 from the field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Warriors were up to the task early on against the No. 5 nationally-ranked Golden Knights, leading 17-14 eight minutes in. Pichardo got the scoring started with a layup right at the rim, as Nasir Griffin found him for a quick two points. A six-point run off a layup from Millirons, two free throws by Adrian Brito, and then a layup from Williams tied the game at eight apiece. After that, ESU started to force Gannon into misses on the offensive end and turn those into quick threes. Christian Pierre-Louis and Ethan Maynard connected on transition threes to go up 14-10, and a couple of possessions later, Williams nailed a stepback three-pointer.
- The difference in the game was the final 10 minutes of the first half. During that span, Gannon outscored ESU 41-12, as the Warriors shot just 18.6% from the field and turned the ball over nine times. On the flip side, the Golden Knights shot 13-22 from the field and only committed two turnovers.
- After coming out of the break trailing 55-29, the Warriors were unable to make a run that would have gotten the margin closer. Gannon won the second half 49-44, making it a final of 104-73.
