EAST STROUDSBURG – Led by five double-figure scorers and double-doubles from Carlos Pepin and Nasir Griffin, the East Stroudsburg University men's basketball team remained undefeated through four games with a dominant 110-61 win over D'Youville on Tuesday evening inside Koehler Fieldhouse.
The Warriors (4-0) reach the century mark for the third consecutive contest, while the Saint (1-5) fall in its fifth consecutive contest after defeating Mansfield in its season opener.
Reaching double-figures in scoring for the Warriors were Pepin (16 pts, 12 reb.), Jaelen McGlone (16 pts.), Griffin (14 pts., 11 reb.), Lakeem McAliley (12 pts.) and Justin Paz (10 pts., 6 assists).
Notables
- Mike Millsip (8 pts.), Shamir Johnson (8 pts.) and David Duda Jr. (7 pts.) flirted with double-figures, as 12 Warriors registered points.
- Pepin, the 2022 PSAC East Athlete of the Year, shot an efficient 8-11 and distributed four assists and earned three steals. The double-double for Pepin is the first this season and the 10th of his career.
- It was another balanced performance offensively for ESU, who has totaled five double-figure scorers in three of four games this season.
- Griffin has a standout performance with his first career double-double. He was perfect from the free-throw line (7-7).
- Leading scorer Lakeem McAliley was held to 12 points, after early foul trouble. He made all five of his field goal attempts.
- Zach Sabol stuffed the stat sheet with six points, five rebounds, four blocks, three assists and a steal. He shot an efficient 3-4 from the floor.
- The Warrior press caused the Saints' fits, with ESU grabbing 15 steals and forcing 24 DYU turnovers.
- The free throw line continues to be a strength for ESU, both getting to the line and converting the attempts, making 19-24 from the stripe. ESU entered the game as a top-5 team in NCAA Division II in both free throw attempts and free throws made.
- ESU dominated the boards by a mark of 54-42, grabbing 14 offensive rebounds that resulted in 20 second-chance points. ESU tallied 70 points in the paint compared to 40 for DYU's 40.
- ESU has now recorded at least 106 points in each of its past three games. ESU last accomplished three consecutive century-mark games last season, in wins over Lock Haven (100-81), Mansfield (116-97) and West Chester (100-95) to close the regular season.
- Leading the Saints in scoring was Luke Theisen with 15 points. Latrell Butler posted six rebounds.
How it Happened
- ESU never trailed. The Warriors built an early 8-0 lead and extended to 32-7 at the halfway point in the opening half. The Warriors made 12 of its first 20 field goal attempts and held D'Youville to start just 3-of-17 from the field with nine turnovers.
- A quick 10-0 spurt from the Saints sliced the deficit to 15. ESU countered with a 9-0 run off its own and closed the half on a 22-7 sprint for a 30-point halftime lead at 54-24.
- The Warriors did not let up on the gas, building a game-high 53 point lead with 2:21 to go at 108-55. DYU scored six of the final eight points for the final score of 110-61.
